Bergantino

Have you compared the Berg 410 compared to your EBS 410?

At first listen, they sound pretty similar. The Berg might be a little warmer and tighter. I haven't sat them side by side yet, but I know my GB410 sound pretty well after all these years...

Of course, that could just be new speakers vs old speakers, too. My GBs are definitely broken in...

** EDIT - Oh, yeah, my 210 is EBS, my 410 and 115 are Genz-Benz

A 12" speaker just happens to be 2" larger in diameter than a 10" speaker.
That's the only thing that is certain.

Tada... no need to thank me, I'm a whiz kid. :smug:

:hiding: :p

I played 15" cabs and combos that were tighter, clearer and more fullrange than some 4x10 cabs that seemed muffled.

It all depends which box you put the speakers into.

Buying blind without trying... I'd rather go for a Bergantino for this reason. It's not just putting speaker in a box.

Stefan, You're right! (And smart too):smug:

I think the drivers themselves play as important a role as anything else too.

But comparing Berg's 412 to Berg's 610, for me that's a puzzler.:D That's why I say I have no idea.

OK Greg, Order up a 412 and tell us the difference straight away.

:D

I'm definitely no expert on acoustic engineering.

When I started out 11 years ago I thought the only logic cab choice was any 4x10 cab.
That was the extent of my thought process back then.

I owned Trace Elliot, Ashdown and Hartke cabs and tested out several other brands.
None were alike. Some were good for me, some I hated.

I played 15" combos that could deliver a sound I could use, and I don't go for a deep bassy sound.

I'm lately venturing into the world of cabs myself.

I have a Barefaced 2x12 on the way to replace my 4x10.
If it works out.

Man, it tears me up to compromise on my tone, I don't know if I can do it... Heck, I'm only 40, right? It's the new 25! And I still workout 3-4 times a week! :rollno:

Ray - the Berg 410 is VERY nice! It's warm and punchy, and it projects really well. If I didn't already have a nice 410, I'd be thinking about it.

I think the 610 gives a litle more clear bottom than your typical 410 cab, which is why I pair my current GB-410 with a 115. I use the F1X's crossover to send 150Hz and below to the 115 cab for "reinforcement". I run the 410 full range, and then I dial in as much "sub" from the 115 as I need/want for a given room.

All that said, I'm pretty sure the 610 cab sounds noticeably better than my current 410/115 combination. Whenever I see a chance to improve my tone, I usually do... which probably explains why my rig still weighs 160+ lbs :eek:

All kidding aside about the aged, upgrading to the 610 is the smart way to go period. Just go for it. You'll never regret doing so. Hell, you may even want two.

I'll be curious to see how the various Class D heads play with these Berg cabs. I'm sure they'll work very well with the smaller cabs, but I suspect the big boys (410 on up) will benefit from a more "traditional" power amp. Ya can't beat a Crest CA6/CA9 in my book, at least as far as dedicated power amps go.

Much as I wanted to check out the Class D's today, I just couldn't stop playing my amp rig (F1X->CA6) through that 610 with every Roscoe in the store. I swear when I plugged my personal fretless in, it was like "so THAT'S how Jaco got away with solo'ing the bridge pickup all those years". The tone was fat and yummy no matter what I did with my pickup blend.

Years ago (when I thought I was already in tone heaven) I made a tremendous tone leap when I switched from an Ampeg SVT-III-Pro head to the Alembic F1X and a Crest CA9 power amp. It wasn't like a 5% improvement, it was the proverbial "pulled the blanket off/pulled the cotton out" kinda transformation. All of a sudden, I had bottom with all of the notes on the neck. The upper register notes used to be thin and wimpy through the Ampeg, but they became warm and buttery through the Alembic/Crest setup. And I didn't change cabs in that time, it was the same GB 410 and GB 115 that I use today.

And just as a side note, I made that transformation in two steps. First I got the Alembic F1X. I'd tried it in the store (not my store, this was before I bought Rocket) through a Crest CA6 and the same GB cabs I use, and it was tonal nirvana. I got it home and tried it through some lightweight QSC piece of work, and I was beyond disappointed. I called my guy at the store, and he quickly hipped me to the fact that the QSC PA with the switching power supply was NOT in the same league as the Crest w/ the torroidal power supply. Sho' nuff, I got a Crest CA9 and the rest is history. I've since downgraded to a CA6 because I never got over "2" on the CA9...

Anyway, long post short - I seriously think this NV610 might just play out to be every bit as big a difference for my tone. :hyper:

Of course, all of this only works for me because I'm still willing/able to schlep heavy stuff. And my monster rig doesn't scare the folks I play with :eek: :rollno: I don't for a second question anyone who says enough is enough, give me some small, lightweight gear that sounds good. I totally get that, I'm just not there yet... my back wants me to be there, but I'm not :hmm:

I'm with you there Greg. Small gear is great for coffee shop gigs n such but I haven't played many coffee house gigs. For a regular Bar gig or street fair, the Eden WT800 and the Berg HT115's fit the bill. But when it's something larger then its the Eden WT800 & WT1000 the 2 Bergs and 2 SWR Henry the 8 cabs. Oh the sweet pain of it all....

Now we're talking!!

I was thinking the VERY same thing!

It would be ridiculous unless I was playing arenas, but, man, I bet it would sound amazing!!!

Didn't Jaco always have a pair of those monstrous Acoustic cabs behind him? What were they? 610s? 810s?

I recall reading long ago that Jaco's favorite Acoustic cabs were the 18's, and yeah, every time I saw him with Weather Report he was using two of them.

:hyper: overwhelming is all i can say,the bergatino 6er & vroom vroom roscoe sounded so sweet together,thanks for letting me check them out Greg.Hope to be back real soon for that roscoe.:bassist:

Yeah, man, it was great to meet you, Rick! You pushed me over the edge with this darn 610 cabinet!! I left you alone with the bass and went back to the other side of the store, and the tone was just stoopid good.

Nice playing, by the way! VroomVroom would be proud to see the bass he designed is your capable hands.

Sounds like the Berg 610 has won you over.
I can only imagine how it sounds but that's all that I'll do. I only use a single 112 and the sound crew, still from time to time, ask me to turn down. I guess it's a mixed blessing. At 54 my back has carried too many B3's, C3's, VOT cabinets, etc .....up and down the stairs and I've totally lost the desire to do that ever again.

It's quite nice strapping on my bass dub bag, grabbing the 8-9 lb TC Rh450 head and 30 lb TC RS112 and heading out for the gig! Given all of the factors it's quite a nice sound. If I need more sound I just let the sound crew bump me up in the mains.

I guess it's true. Ignorance is bliss! :)

P.S. Although I will say that I'm still waiting on your report on the HT112 ER with the TC heads.

So I've had a REALLY fun Sunday! I decided to mic up the Bergantino HT112ER cab and run a few different amps through it. And just for grins, I also did one take with the Bergantino NV610.

I did four different takes over the same drum & chord loop. All takes used this Roscoe bass with the onboard EQ set flat and the blend centered. And in case you're wondering, yes, this IS my favorite Roscoe in the store at the moment (other than my two personal ones, of course).
2827.jpg

I used three amps in this shootout:
1) Genz-Benz Shuttle 9.0
2) TC Electronic Classic 450
3) My personal amp rig (Alembic F1X -> Crest CA6)

All of the amps were set flat, and none of the tone shaping stuff was engaged (no bass boost, no mid cut, no tube sim, etc.). All I adjusted was the preamp gain and the master volume.

I did one take through each head into the HT112ER, and then I did a final take with my amp rig driving the NV610.

I used two Audio-Technica mics. An AT2021 small diaphram condenser was about 3 inches away from the woofer and slightly off axis. An AT2020 side-address Cardiod Condenser mic was about 3 feet away from the cab to capture the entire cabinet.

Both mics went into an ART USB dual pre USB interface. That provided phantom power to the mics and converted the audio to USB. That went straight into the PC & the Sonar application.

Here's the timing of each take:
00:00 - 00:50 : Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 -> Bergantino HT112ER
00:50 - 01:42 : TC Electronic Classic 450 -> Bergantino HT112ER
01:42 - 02:42 : Alembic F1X -> Crest CA6 -> Bergantino HT112ER
02:42 - 04:08 : Alembic F1X -> Crest CA6 -> Bergantino NV610

So, enough of the technical crap! Check out the clip:

And because I know you guys are generous and forgiving, I'll throw out the naked bass track so you can REALLY hear the rigs.
