Bergantino

So, not that you asked, but...how low and hard does an HT112ER hit? Well, let me tellya'. :D

Last night's gig got LOUD. I'll have some better clips available soon, but I was interested to see if things sounded as good on 'tape' as they did live. There's nothing quite like some low notes - Eb and Db in specific - to keep the dance floor movin'. MTD 635 > Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 > HT112ER. EQ flat on the amp, lows boosted to 6/10 on the bass. One cab...just damn.

Cool moment on 'I Wish' - on the last gliss, the keyboard player yells, "Damn!" at the power coming from the rig. :D

Alright, sorry for the multiple posts. Just listened to Greg's clip for the second time. Some notes.

1. Greg, you're badass. Terrific playing. Nasty where appropriate, but always fat, full, greasy, and just GROOVIN'. Nice!

2. That TC head sounds fantastic. First time I've really heard one. Very mean in the low mids.

3. You really, really....really have me missing my F1X. Best pre-amp I've ever heard. Back when my trusty old Crown power amp bit the dust, I didn't see any reason to keep the Alembic. I still have pangs, even though it'd probably just collect dust. That is one heck of a rig you have there.

4. Did I comment on the playing? I love those gliss/trills! Yeah, baby, yeah!

Hah! Thanks so much, Jerry, it's been a really fun day :) It was a real challenge to make the last take as interesting as the first... I mean, really, how many tricks can one bust out over a 4 minute long 2-chord vamp to keep it interesting?!? That was pretty much my whole bag of tricks :)

I still wish I could play "pretty" like you can. I've got the stanky groove thang in spades, but when I sit back and try to play slow and melodic lead type stuff... eh, my rhythm gets repetitive, my phrasing stinks, I don't address the chords as well as I could, blah, blah, blah... Woe is me, right?

I think the amps speak for themselves in the clip, but just in case here's my take on the heads. The Shuttle 9.0 is the edgiest, it's got a nice bite that cuts well in a mix. The TC Classic 450 is a little smoother, but still edgy (probably, as you said, the edge is lower) and even a little grungy. Then the Alembic F1X into the Crest CA6 is just fat, round, smooth, buttery goodness all around.

Both cabs slam like a ton of bricks in this clip, which suprised me a little bit. The HT112ER does indeed slam better in person than I originally gave it credit for (it likes power, and I gave it quite a bit today). Still, the NV610 is on a whole 'nother planet in the slam department... as one would be expected with 6 10s in a huge box up against a single 12 in a tiny box.

NICE CLIPS MAN!!!!:bassist:

You're super clean playin' nekkid.:smug:

I thought I'd like the TC best, but I'm diggin' the Genz;).

So here's ya a question, I've been told the Bart CB's in my Century Standard are "aggressive" and you seem to describe the Genz in the same manner. Do you think a CS and Genz combo would be "too much"?.

Again, I have no clue personally and I'm all ears. :D

God Bless, Ray

Nope. I almost said, "no such thing as too much," but even if there was...much better to have and dial back than not have and wish you did. :D

You're not helping with the GAS Jerry:p. To have that "big" of a tone from a single 12 and a lightweight head.:help:

Your right about "dialing back" though.;) So with your Genz 9.0 and Berg stack do you see 900W as being "too much" for the cabs?

God Bless, Ray

Shoot, Cliff, the Berg is a rounding error on your last Roscoe  :D

One thing we should all keep in mind is my clip was done with EVERYTHING flat. The bass, the amps, the tweeter control on the 112 cab. There is gobs of room to EQ and change gain levels all over the place. I suspect I could get all of these amp rigs sounding pretty similar if I had the patience to tweak them all.

The real difference for me is in the live sound and feel. They all sound/feel good, but I have my personal preferences that I think sound/feel gooder for me :)

Nice Greg. Looking forward to hear the comparisons using the 610 cab.

After listening with the speakers up loud:
The first and third are my favorites
The second doesn't have the definition 1 & 3 have.
The fourth lacks some of the clarity in the lows and gets a little brittle or clacky in the highs but still sounds pretty decent.

Jerry - I finally found time to give your clips a more serious listen now that the kiddies are asleep. Sounds like ya'll had a party going on!

Dude, those kicks at the end of "I Wish" are thundering! I love it! Was that both 112s? And how would you describe your EQ setup on the bass and on the Shuttle 9 head?

** EDIT - duh, questions answered in your original post... must put the Bud Light away for the night...

Not at all. Greg mentioned that these cabs like a little bit of power thrown at them - very similar to Epifani IME, so I don't have any concerns. Honestly, I still haven't experienced both of these cabs together - that'll happen at a pretty big gig later this month. In any case, I certainly don't peg the amp, and I've never had a concern with having an amp's peak rating higher than that of the cab(s) it's driving.

Single cab, Greg. And the band was definitely giving off some decibels. :) I'm still just amazed at this thing. I always thought the Aggie GS112 could get pretty darn loud, but the Berg? Oh my. Amp was completely flat, with the pre-gain boosted to 2 o'clock. On the bass, I had my 'normal' EQ - lows boosted to 6/10, mids & highs flat, blend centered.

BITCHIN!!! Kicked back and listened with a big grin on my face. Jerry my man, you just nail it. Your playing and using the berg cab is killer.
I think I may grab a beer and kick back for another listen...

Dude, you have great ears. On the 4th pass, that was the 610... and one thing I did change when I switched to the 610 was I flipped the "bright" switch "on" on my F1X. I think that explains the clackiness up top...

I think the 610 cab is also a little more lively, not as compressed as the 112. Before posting that, I had done a quick "Normalize" on each of the four takes, and the majority of the 610 content did not get pulled up as much as the 112 content. I need to dissect that 4th pass and bring up the overall level to make it a more even comparison. It's amazing the impact 1-2 dB of level can have in our perception of bass tone...

Thanks for the feedback!

Interesting.. I assumed the fourth pass was the 410 as you had stated. Seeing as how it was in fact the 610 and pushing more air I would have expected a lot more clarity and definition. Bring the levels up when you get a chance and lets hear that bad boy again.

As always Greg, your playing is excellent and really makes listening to the samples so much more informative. Good Job..

Oh, jeez, did I really do that?!? I'll go fix my 410 references... sorry for the confusion! It was definitely the 610, and it was shaking the walls at Rocket. All those rhythmic gyrations in the 4th pass are what that cab MADE me play. It was like "no melody allowed, groove only!!".
