This answer makes sense, I would also say: the most metal speaker you could use is a LOT of them.
I've used a 15" Realistic speaker (as you probably know, also a Radio Shack brand) with a 20 watt heathkit amp and honestly, it didn't sound half bad, within its limitations.
Could be. Instead of relying on what you appear to assume are a bunch of dumb asses on talk bass for advice, I'd suggest that the OP contact some manufacturers directly with "all" of the information, or lack thereof, provided in the original post and see what they deem to be "the best 15" speaker.

It’s tricky as you have now found out.
For example, I have an old Ampeg fliptop tube amp. When I bought it over 40 years ago it had the cheapest original 15” speaker. Celestian? Eminence? Anyhow, sounded fantastic with my upright bass and just ok with Fender bass. Thinking a JBL d140 would improve things I put one in. Sucked for upright, a bit nicer for electric. So I went back to the cheap crap original speaker and that is what I have used all these decades. See how it is tricky to get right?
Listen to agedhorse. He knows of what he speaks. There are so many old awesome sounding boxes out there for cheap.
Another example: I picked up a perfect Mesa Powerhouse 410 (I realize this is not what you want) wrapped in original real suede for $200 Canadian. Sure beats getting tortured with experiments that don’t end up sounding great. Whatever you end up doing, good luck with it!

I agree; listen to agedhorse. My experience is very similar to Casey Vancouver's.
However, just for reference - I rocked a series of TL cabs with EVM-15B (Elector-Voice 15" - several series besides "B"). TL cabs were designed by R.H. Small and A.N. Thiele. Ridiculously strong cabs, inexpensive to build, rat fur optional, with very reliable speakers, cheap to re-cone. I ran them with big power amps 750 /side. Rarely blew them up, but it did happen over the years certainly when they got "tired'.
There are far superior designs/ performance by Eminence etc. nowadays as one would suspect after all these years. Certainly stuff can be a lot lighter (he says eyeing his current 20# cabs). But even today the EV/TL combo can sound pretty damn good in proper combinations with careful amplification. Have fun!!

I had a similar thought about trying a little project by building a tube amp out of a kit. There was a company that makes those kits linked in a thread somewhere on this forum. So I went to the companies website and looked around. My wake-up moment came when I started reading the FAQ, and the questions being asked about the product made me realize how far under water my knowledge was.
Nobody here is trying to insult you for not knowing things. Being direct and being insulting are different things.

Both that EV’s TL cabinets were designed in house by EV, based on the math and modeling by Thile and Small.
The driver’s performance was designed around the TS parameters (EVM series, post SRO) and then a series of cabinets (with a primary and a step-down tuning) were developed initially to sell drivers but were later used to design lines of cabinets in house.
Manufacturers were free to use EV’s designs with EV drivers, but later manufacturers designed their own cabinets around the TS math. Simultaneously, driver manufacturers began providing the TS parameters of their drivers, and with some serious slide rule work cabinet designs took a significant step forward.
There were no commercial cabinets designed by Thile and Small that I am aware of.

I had a couple of those designed cabinets with EV’s. My main workhorse cabs for many years. I sold them. I know who has them, I could probably get them back for nostalgia. But, nah… getting too old to move them…they were heavy!

Yes, they were undead heavy as hell, especially those with the additional VMR driver.
