Also i have to agree w/ what Uncletood describes on the bandstand. Too much girthy lows get cut out. Initially we're both talking about the HP's on the Focus 2R III which is the only HP I have exprience w/,but Phil has says he experiences this w/ other HP's as well. Can they all be set higher than they say?

I hope my more complete posts made it clear that that it is the relative phase between two systems that is important. Thus, a phase-reversal switch could be very useful for reducing cancellation between to separate systems.

I don't think companies are very careful about following convention when they spec a HPF for the consumer. They may mark it 30 Hz because that's where the response is down substantially. To achieve that, they may put the "corner" frequency up higher and begin the roll-off there. I use a tunable HPF set at 40 Hz. In my case, the corner really is at 40 Hz. I measured it myself.

When I first started to use it, I thought it might be cutting out the lows BUT it was because I was plugging the HPF into the "active" input of my amp whereas I had been plugging the piezo pickup into the "passive" input. When I plugged the HPF into the "passive" input-- Voila! The problem in the first case seemed to have been the loading and ultimate filtering properties produced by the interaction of the "active" input and the output of the HPF.

I'm a little confused. you seem to be contradicting yourself. You boost the bass slider all the way and use the HPF at higher volumes or just lower levels? Isn't that some wacky EQing? I could see boosting the low end a bit w/ the HPF to add girth and tighten the sound like that, but isn't all the way a bit much? If there is enough low end at higher volumes why boost the bass that much. I'd be afraid to hurt the speakers.

Yeah, I know it sounds wacky right? But that's the secret sauce, at least for my setup. at low volumes I don’t use the hp filter at all, I just crank the bass because like unclefrog, I like to feel the bass in my gut, but at higher volumes, I boost the low slider all the way, then engage the high pass filter and turn the frequency knob till it hits the "sweet spot".. I don’t know exactly what the corner frequency is because the fishman doesn’t label it, but I guess what's happening is I’m getting maximum bass just above where the corner frequency is, so I don’t perceive any loss of bottom, just those frequencies that bother me. it's all done by ear, not by frequency numbers, so i make sure it sounds good to me. i like the heavy lows, but i suspect the stuff that i'm cutting is the piezo rumble, kind of like the hp filters are used widely for instrument mics and vocal mics. they just get rid of the pops, wind noise, stage rumble etc.. i'm not saying that the pickup picks up all of that, but the filter is definately something i like and i also like lots of low end... go figure...???
 
Yes, it is a funny sort of EQ but, if it works for you, then go with it. What you are doing is boosting the bass frequencies you like and then using the HPF to actually cut some of them by raising the corner frequency of the HPF so that it cuts into the low-frequency range somewhere between about 40 and 100 Hz.

yeah, i suspect that since i have the bass slider up so much, that through the usable range of the bass i'm not actually cutting any lows at all, but below that i'm getting a steep drop off. if you were to graph it the line may be crossing zero around 40, and to the left of that point it's steeply declining and to the right of that its steeply inclining....i could probably accomplish the same thing with a graphic eq that has enough range, but this works so why mess with it?
