Best 4 string for around $1500

Just buy a Fender American Standard P bass. It will do anything and everything you need. Ever.

Heck yeah man, I'm with snyder. There must be a reason you mentioned a p, such as you have liked the sound and looks of the ones you have seen and heard.Find the best feeling and sounding P bass for that money you can get your hands on. They just get the job done.

As a fellow 16 year old, my advice is to get a used MIM jazz bass, put the rest of the money in the bank for later. Practice a ton, since there's no point in buying a nice bass if you cant play it. Go to your local music store and find a $1500 bass that you fall in love with. Get a job (if you don't have one) and work your a** off until you have enough money for it (probably a year or so). When you can afford it after working hard for it, you'll love it that much more and have a new perspective on the value of money and hard work.

A Strat is one of the true "gold standard" guitars (Les Paul being the other one). Easy to see why Fender is the frame of reference.

I just picked up one of these and frankly is is as good as most boutique "Fendery" basses. Flexible, classic looks - nice instruments. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/PBassADR3TS/

A plain old P-bass would do the trick as well. As others have said, you could buy used or go with a cheaper instrument. But if you want to spend $1500, go for it.

Never seen a brand-new Rickenbacker for less than 2K
Absolutely. Maybe not where you live.

Online, they sell all day long for just over that new. During sales at the big US online retailers, they have occasionally gone for $1200-1300 new. $1400-1500 new is pretty common of you know where to look and use online coupons, etc.

They are under $1700US new in Canada and that is sticker price. I can buy one right now for likely under $1600USD.

I have no idea why people continue to pay $1500+ for used RICs. The perception is that they (4003) are over $2k new and they are not.

I believe the Lakland Skyline 44/02 comes in right around there. They are assembled overseas, but the quality is good, the neck is easy to play and they are very flexible basses. They can mimic a Precision tone, a Jazz tone and a Music Man tone. Personally I preferred the Bartolini electronics to the Lakland electronics, but they are still very good basses.

That's cheap :O

In europe's largest retailer (thomann) a rickenbacker 4003 costs 2100€ (2700US$)

Used ones being sold for 1500€ where I live... (1900US$)
