I'm currently looking for a new bass. I currently play an American peavey cirrus 4, but just got a gospel gig and I'm needing the low b. Any ideas? What do you guys like. I needs to be a good deal as I'm a broke college student, but I am a music major and need high quality, as good or better than my cirrus.

G&L L2500. You can get the a used USA model for around $1000.
Or if you're handy with such things, get a Brubaker Brute and upgrade the electronics.
Lakland 5501 is good as well, and has 35" scale.
Look into MTD Saratoga's, which are around $600.

+1 for the Lakland 55-01. I used to have one, and the neck was the most comfortable I've played.
You say you like your cirrus? Why not get another? I love my cirrus 5 and picked it up for $750. I have never found anything that I liked better personally, although I do really like my grind 5.
Well I've thought about getting another cirrus. I absolutely love mine, just getting ideas about other basses. My only complaint with the cirrus is the large scale length, i have short arms, and playing in 1st position can start to hurt my shoulder. I'd love a Ken smith, but it's to much. I'm gonna have to buy a better double bass for orchestra soon and it's gonna be a huge chunk of change... If only I had about 30 grand to spend lol

My Schecter Omen 5, with a 0.130ga B string, sounds and plays great. With a 0.125ga string (which it has right now), it isn't as great. It does sound very bright and modern. This can be mitigated to a certain extent with diligent EQing, but it still has that bell-like tone. But that's OK with me, because that is what I want it to sound like.
Of course, it is the only 5er I've played in the last 15 years.

I am certainly not very experienced here, but I just picked up a used 5-string Warwick Corvette & really like it. Apparently, they can be found at pretty reasonable prices on the used market. The low B is nice.

+2 on the Lakland. I own a 55-02 and it's my first 5 string. I also have shorter arms, but you will get used to the extra inch on the scale real quick. The sound of these things, especially the low B, are amazing. The thing I really like about them is the push/pull active to passive switch and the banjo frets.
Sadowsky 5-24 used for 1600-1900 is the last 5 you'll ever need. If that is a little steep the laklands kill.
It looks like this has already been mentioned but make shure you get a 35' scale. If not the B is just too floppy and useless. I also like active PUs. Singel coil or humbuckers sound great on fivers.
