Actually, you can add two of their 8 ohm extension cabs.

You could eventually add 2 of the XC115XC cabs, for the full 200 watts out of 3 15's. Which is good if thats your thing(personally, I like 15's)

I tihnk the ashdown with the epi would work great. That combination of brands works well. Unfortuantely, the ashdown at 8 ohms is only 180 watts, which is probably what crescent seven was refering to. Id want to go for a 4 ohm cab if I were you.

I liked my GK Backline 600 just fine, but the Ashdown is certainly a smart call too. Skip the GK cab and go with an Avatar.

by their lonesome isn't going to get the booty movin' like it
would if the two 10s were sittin on top of a 2x15.
I have owned several pieces of yamaha gear and have not
owned any thing carvin,but I would buy the carvin b500 overthe yamaha bbt head. But then again I would buy
the yamaha bbt over the ashdown mag or
gk backline any day of the week.
If used wasn't a problem I would say definitely check out
a Eden wt400, gk800rb or the above mentioned max450

I guess you haven't played any of the newer cabs out there. 2x15's are archaic remnants of testosterone laden rock bands who want the looks. Bigger does not mean better or louder these days . My two Yamaha BBT110S cabs kick out WAY more volume than most 2x10 cabs I've tried (including an Eden 210XLT) and my Acme B2 and B4 cabs will get the walls shaking faster than cabs twice their size. It's about good design, not bulk.
As for Carvin, I like their products in general and the BRX series amps are the best they've done so far, but the issue with Carvin stuff is the warranty service (have to mail it back it to CA) and the power amp reliability issues and over-rating of wattage. I live by the Carvin store and go in there a bunch, FWIW.
I'd buy the Yamaha over the Carvin any day. To me less weight + higher quality tone is MUCH BETTER THAN booty shakin, high volume mud with a sore back. And I've owned many of those gigantic monstrosities (6x10, 8x10,8x8,etc). Just my $.02 as well.
Well the only reason I mentioned the bbt cabinets in the first place is because you brought them up and the cabinets are a great price right now. Yeah, I'd take one of those Edens or Acmes over the Yamaha.

I play mostly rock/metal/funk and I'm looking for something powerful with some versatility. I'm looking for a setup that's really articulate but had a heavy bottom end. I played through an Ampeg 1x15 and while it was good for bottom end, it was really muddy and indestinct. Does a tweeter on a cab help higher end articulationism (it's not a word but it should be) much?

In my area(upstate NY), I'd have no problem finding a used Mark VI or VIII and a 410TXF in that price range - then later on add another cab if you want, and you'd be all set for even the largest gigs... I play fairly large outdoor shows with my rig, against either a full stack Marshall or 2 half stacks - depending on which band - and I'm never lacking for sound from my bass rig - great tone, TONS of clean power...

I respectfully disagree. I think less weight is ALWAYS better as long as you don't sacrifice tone. And if you notice the trend right now, most amp manufacturers are really trying to minimize weight while maximizing volume & clarity; lighter and more efficient speakers and better boxes. That's why I've chosen the dual 1x10 setup; I don't need to "look cool", I just want to sound cool. Besides the vast majority of us are not going to be playing venues that warrant gigantic rigs. How stupid does it look when you're playing a room that holds 100 people and you've got an 8x10 and your idiot guitar player has a full stack cramped on a tiny stage so you can barely move? Especially when you're already running DI's/mikes to the board!
I just want the OP to get the idea that he doesn't need to go
big to get big sound. That's the jist of it.
