best bang for the $...

Consider getting an Avatar 212 and Neo or Pro 410, both in 4ohms, do the crossover mod on both, then try a Kustom Groovebass 1200 head. You can get away with an awesome sounding full stack for like $1400. There are def even more budget oriented deals too. Im using an Avatar B212 with the crossover mod and a Peavey Firebass head and it totally blows my 350watt Fender Bassman 400 2x10 combo away.
If I had $2000 to blow on a rig, I'd go for a Fender Bassman Pro 300, 300 all tube watts. It is very loud, you won't need anything louder, and it sounds awesome and is extremely versitle with tons of controls. For cabs, I think an Aguilar 412 or Bergantino 610 or 215 fits the bill. If thats a bit over, also check out an Eden 410, and if you ever need more you can always add another cab.
whoa, got a lot more suggestions than i thought i would. the main problem is the only things i could probably try out are the ampegs and GKs, and probably not even those models. the two closest shops to me that carry amps are GC, which only really has a couple huge ass ampegs and a bunch of combos besides that, and guitar showcase, which according to their site, carry pretty much only GKs out of the list i got from you guys, and i dont even know if theyre bass amps.
also, how big of a head (in terms of wattage, and ohms or whatever) would i need if i just wanted one cab now, but wanted to add one later?

well more watts never hurt anyone, but you should be "ok" at 300 and well equiped with 600.

Not only the amp, but figuring out how to get the amp set up and replace the Johnson bass.
Used pre (200-300), used power (300-400) home made rack it youreself, Avatar cab or used ? And only $1000 - $1200 has been spent. Should leave some for a reasonable bass.

Look for power ratings and ohms. If you want one cab for now and want it to be 8ohms, look for a head that puts out at least 300watts into 8ohms. If you want one 4ohm cab and want to add another cab later on, look for a head that can go down to 2ohms and puts out at least 300watts into 4ohms. The GK 1001RB-II would be good for the former and the Kustom Groovebass and Yorkville XS800H would be good for the latter. There are also many other heads in this power range, just browse musiciansfriend.com and music123.com. Don't be afraid to order something sight unseen. Many companies have free shipping and generous return policies and trial periods. What kind of sound do you like? (ex. lots of low end, boomy, tight, punchy, articulate, sparkling highs, muted highs, nasal, no highs, etc.)

You have so many options with that amount of cash BUT until you get that new rig just remember you are recording with "a crappy mic" (according to you). That's mistake #1. A better amp will improve your tone but a crappy mic will still record crap. The Crate Bx-100 is a good practice amp, keep it at home.....Keep your big rig at your rehersal space.

You need to be able to match the Ohms on a cab (if you have 2 cabs of the same Ohm rating, then just divide the Ohms by 2) as close as you can to one of the settings on a tube amp, and when using a SS amp you need to be at or above the minimum impedance rating. And when buying your rig, couldn't you just drive up to San Francisco? I'm sure they have plenty of stores up there...

i think im probably looking at a kustom groovebass 1200hd amp and 2 avatar cabs. probably the B210 NEO cabinet (4-ohm) and another one, not sure which yet (as suggested by vincenzajay and a few others).

Also check out the Traynor YBA-200. Its only $600 and its 200 watts all tube. Avatar would work fine with this as well.

If I were in the market for a new amp, I'd go Eden all the way. The big time cranking rig would be a WT-800 head and a 4 ohm D-410-XLT cab. Very reliable, very powerful, and very flexible. However, if you don't want to spend as much, you could be very satisfied with one of their smaller rigs. Go to eden-electronics.com to do a little research. Then work with the guys at bass northwest to hook you up. IMO, you won't be disappointed.

I budgeted $1000 on just a head alone, demo'd a ton of 'em and wound up with the GrooveBass. It sounded just as good as some of the higher priced heads I played thru (looks nicer on stage, tho)...and better than others, so why pay the difference??
BTW, the $400 savings bought my AKG wireless unit and BOSS VF-1 effects unit.
