Best bass for death/doom metal???

Got an ibanez sr640 (MIJ model), suits very well for fast death or doom (mdb, on wich Ade uses a Warwick Thumb, or anathema alike on their older stuff with very clean sounds, as turn loose the swans and crestfallen). It's very fast to play and has lot's and lot's of attack, ok for lower bass, and not strong on mids, having a nice sustain and a very cold tone that will suit well on a solid state amp. These basses are no longer made but maybe you can still get them for cheap, it was a series aimmed for quality (being MIJ made, and more expensive than the more featured 3band eq korean series like the sr400) at lower price than the sr800 wich is fully active.

ps: forgot to add, it's all black, hardware and full neck :D

my son plays death metal and he has gone through many basses. He just traded his MM 5 string (I could kill him) for a Spector Q5 ? He didn't like the maple neck on the Ernie Ball and the lower string kept siding off the neck (not the B -the other side) and it had a real problem in studio recordings with some kind of clacking from the pickups. He's an agressive hand player (mudvayne style) and it had something to do with the exposed poles in the EB humbucker he thinks. I think most metal players use picks?

he had a Warwick Corvette a couple years ago and his next $ bass will be a Warwick Thumb. Like someone else said, Music Mans for the sustain are a popular choice for metal, but it's all about how it feels and sounds to you. That and cutting through the mix. He did try his fender non-actives in a punk band and had trouble cutting through with that bass even with his Ampeg 8x10's and SVT Pro tube amp.

although I'm not a bassplayer, I am constantly beat to death with researching alot of stuff online for him. It's probably so I'll know how to advise him when he get's a wild hair to buy on impluse again which seems to happen to alot of bass players ;)

I'd like to add that it might happen with violent finger playing in a soundgear if he uses thick strings. It happens very rarely to me with thick picks, but for him it could be worse.

It rally deosn't matter what you play, it's how you play it. Usually with metal, there is alot of distortion and overdrive. All of the brands listed are going to do the trick for you. I play thrash/hardcore with a Schecter 4 and Cort Curbow 5. Both feel different, but do the job. Anyway, I know alot of fast, heavy bassists use Music Man basses. I have a BC Rich comming, so I'll let you know about that. Later Joe
