This is so subjective, I apologize I mean it in a kind way, but it all depends on the genre at hand. Really anything can work IMO. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard (yes that's their name) started as a bluesy-garage rock Aussie band and used a Mustang with flats, now they have a 5 string microtonal bass. Garage rock theme bands I see everything used, of course mostly Fender products or Yamaha from my own view. For me personally whatever you like and you find fits your band, and for me that would be my jazz or a Yamaha personally.

Just make sure you DO NOT use the best bass for metal or the best bass for country. They just won't work for garage rock.

The best live bass sound I think I've ever heard in 40+ years was Zander Schloss playing this bass through an SVT with The Weirdoes.

Can't go wrong with a P bass. Whatever bass is the best player to you will do just fine.

Anything you like is cool. It really doesn't matter UNLESS the visual matters. If so choose accordingly. P bass is a deeply boring choice.
