best bass for reggae

Great thread.

I've seen a lot of mentions of Stingrays, and I was a bit curious about their role in reggae and dub.

The basses have a fantastic range, but often sound 'clicky' to me.

Any examples of a Ray in use?

I'm new to all of this so please be gentle!

Roll of the highs and pluck the strings closer to the fretboard and away from the pickup (if it is a Stingray with only one pu). Here is a perfomance of the great Don Carlos in which you can see and hear a Stingray.

Basically roll off the highs and play close to the fretboard is all you need to do on any bass. If you're playing reggae style bass... you can make almost any bass work. Usually just EQ heavy on the bass side. Honestly though, the final EQ is up the the player and what they feel works best for the music.

i am interested in purchasing my first bass guitar. i am a keyboard player and now i wanna try some reggae bass. any suggestions on what i should look for or does it not matter? i have been looking at rondomusic.com lately.

I think that you can play reggea on most any bass really convincingly.
Some do it on steinbergers, some on P basses, some on Jazzes.
Get something that you like and really get along with. once you done that practice. :)

I play in a reggae cover band and i tried both a Fender Precision and a jazz bass. Both American standard.
I found that the jazz bass provides that undefined, muddy fat bass like no other. It worked perfectly for songs like 'kinky reggae'. However, if your next song in the gig is 'is this love' , then you need a more defined and punchier sound. It turned out that I sold the jazz bass, because it was not my favourite, and I only use my precision now.
