For $1000 you will be able to add many options that you may want, or you can get a bare-bones Bolt-on 4 for $629, new, unplayed, and you get a 10-day trial period to decide if you want to keep it. If not you send it back for your money.

i'd go for a wishbass
take a look Invalid Link Removed
don't worry you can get them fretted too
For $1000, the new Fender American Standard P's are pretty good. Used Musicman are also a steal
+ on the Carvin...I don't buy used, because you don't REALLY know what you're getting. When you buy a Carvin, you're buying direct...(skipping the middle-man mark-up.) For less than $1000.00 you can have a NICE bass, built to your specs. I know I sound like a Carvin salesman, but I've been playing Carvin for years...I own 2 and I wouldn't part with them.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Are there sound clips of Carvins somewhere? Or somewhere I can play one without just slapping down the cash?
I am biased to this but a Basex.oc can deliver across the spectrum. Very versatile and playable.
