I had the very good fortune to be a volunteer at Victor's camp this past June. Richard Bona stopped in one day and the resulting improv duet with Vic had everyone's jaws dropping

I have probably seen over 300 mid to large venue shows over the years. I was fortunate enough to see John Entwistle five times with the Who before he passed, and as far a rock bassist go there wasn't anyone better.

Jimmy Johnson (with Oz Noy, Wayne Johnson and Holdsworth)
John Patitucci (with Chick Corea)

Ron Carter (solo gig, and he was playing PICCOLO acoustic bass, had another bassist with him)
Stanley Clarke (solo and with RTF)
Jaco Pastorious (solo, circa 1983) Had mixed feelings on this one, he had moments where he KILLED and others he really fell flat on his face, almost literally as he was quite high on something that night
Steuart Liebig: with BLOC back in the 80's in LA, killer funk playing, VERY original lines, great sound and a SCREAM to watch on top of it!
Jonas Hellborg w/ John McLaughlin and the 80's version of Mahavishnu, which was NOT the greatest (nowhere close to the original) but regardless, Jonas was kicking ass that night.
Mike Watt: With the one and only Minutemen! I'l never forget it, that Frankencaster bass, the high-energy performance and those killer punk/funk lines!

I'm impressed by most of the guys I go see live, but the one guy who totally floored me (unexpectedly as well) was the busy session player Alex Al. I stopped by to see Kirk Whalum play a benefit in Pasadena a few years ago. Alex Al was just laying it down the whole evening while Kirk was wailing away on the sax. All of a sudden, Kirk nods at Alex and he proceeds to take the whole band in a new direction, starts some sick vamp which the guitarist picks up, and then just gives one of the sickest solos I've ever witnessed. Everybody stopped talking and just looked in amazement, I didn't know that guy had chops like that!
An interesting caveat - I ran into Alex maybe a month after that at Catalina's when Marcus Miller was playing and I told him I caught his show and how much I enjoyed his playing and he was just incredibly humble, "No way, that's the man up there (pointing to Marcus Miller)". Alex Al is scary good, if you ever have the opportunity to see him live, DO IT!
