Best Bass You've Ever Heard?

Just out of curiosity, I'd like to ask you guys on talkbass what the best bass guitar you have ever heard was. It doesn't have to be yours, or affordable. There might be a thread like this bit I thought this would be fun.


P.S. If you can, maybe avoid answering Fender Jazz or P Basses. I want to hear about basses I don't know about!

The last time I heard a bass on youtube (not the best sound source, obviously) that really blew me away it was a Wyn fretless. In my own hands, the best bass I've ever heard was a Roscoe LG 5. The best sound I've ever heard another live player get was an Alembic Series II. So, 2 more answers than you asked for lol

Alembics look sick. And sound too. My favorite is the mark king signature, it has an awesome look to it.

Aidan, when you ask such a question and then disqualify the very basses which are in fact, the best I've ever heard, that doesn't give me much room to manoeuvre :)

So I'll say it anyway. Anthony Jackson's old 'Career Girl' jazz bass, is the best bass I've ever heard. Followed by Jaco's bass of doom, followed by Dee Murray's stack knob jazz, followed by JJ's funk machine and so on and so forth...

Fenders for me, all the way. They just have THAT sound.

Now one might say "well...in each of those cases, it was the player and not the bass". Well to some extent yes, but isn't that the case with ALL great players? They have the capacity for making an instrument that I'd make sound lacklustre - sound positively brilliant.

P.S honourable mention to Bernard Edwards and Pino Paladino and their respective MM stingrays...Oh and Louis Johnson with his MM sabre

I wouldn't pick one bass because I have heard many I really liked. I liked my P bass in the 60's. Now I like the sound of my Thunderbird and my Rickenbacker 4003. That being said I heard a fellow TB member performing at a Bull Roast I attended and had to go ask what he was playing. It was a Fodera 5 string and it sounded sweet. He did a fine job of making it talk. My coworkers were checking out the ladies while I was checking out the Fodera.

Wow, that's like trying to pick the best pizza..but I had a Modulus with EMGs that was the best IMO, just blew me away, just had too many issues with the necks warping and had to let it go.
