I have no idea what is considered best but I know a few builders that I rate higher than others.
Many builders make very good basses and there isn't much in it in terms of built quality.
Taste is often the deciding factor, I'd say.

Well, that is a bit silly; a colour doesn't have qualitative characteristics so the question cannot be answered.

On the other hand, a bass does have qualitative characteristics, hence the question.

Can you explain a little more why you're saying they are terrible basses...not that you're opinion really matters but just curious why you would say this...

It's like a relationship... it's the chemistry between you and your instrument of choice. There have been some great high end instruments that just didn't fit my hand... so... best... is definitely subjective...
