Once you get into objectively GOOD, there is no objectively BEST. Too many factors, most of which involve personal preference and the rest application.

I think some of us, Fender folk in particular, would like to think our gear is "best" (I admit I would). But when you get a Sadowsky and Fodera owner in one room each may tell you our Fenders are crap, especially in terms of QC. I might be inclined to believe it, especially because the Sadowsky and Fodera basses are all hand-made and not produced en-masse. Love my Fender, but I would take a Fodera in a heartbeat.

I am talking about the best tone, best QA, best materials, best options, best playability etc. the package.

In that case, I would say Alembic. Of course, that's subjective but hey, your question is subjective. That's like asking someone "What's the best car out there?"

Some people say the Precision bass, until the Jazz bass came out. Some people say the Musicman Stingray or the G&L L-2000. I've heard people say nothing is better than the Alembic SC. Then we have the Rickenbacker diehards. People with Peavy T-40s say they're the best, etc, etc, etc.
Funny thing is, they're all wrong.

Unless you set what criteria define the best bass, and ways to measure such criteria, there is not "objectively best bass".

You can begin the process of narrowing things down by going to websites of some places that sell high end basses and then sort from high to low price. It's not the only indicator (obviously) but can help start the process.

Most bass players will want to have a high quality P and/or J type bass in their lineup regardless of other types. Could be Fender or a clone.

My bass is the best because it's the one that I have and can play whenever I want. If/when I get a bass that I think is better than my current one, then that one will be the best bass.
