best bassist?

Welcome to Talkbass. People hate objectivity here (I learned that the hard way). They are against all forms of competition, ranking or objective evaluation.
If that's the lesson you learned, you got it wrong. What we hate is people treating matters of subjective taste and preference as if they were matters of objective fact.

Best bassist?.... everyone has someone they think is best. I can respectively agree or disagree. There are so many greats in every genre and decade. I can't narrow it to one. My influences (who I think are the greatest):
Dennis Dunaway--Alice Cooper
Mel Schacher--Grand Funk
Tom Hamilton--Aerosmith
Michael Anthony--Van Halen (bass+vocals)
Billy Sheehan--various bands
There are many others, but these are my top 4.

I eschew questions like this but for sheets and tribbles I'm going to say Darryl Jones. Not a superstar like McCartney or Geddy but going from Miles Davis to the Rolling Stones with stops at Sting, Peter Gabriel, Madonna, John Scoffield and Mike Stern just to name a few, THAT'S Bradass! Especially when you consider the reputation so many of the above have for being fussy or exacting about who they play with.

Regret to inform you, MT, that there has been a mistake and you did NOT win in the Best Bassist category.

You will have to console yourself with your wins in the Best-Looking Bassist and Best-Looking Precision categories.

Again, apologies!

All the other answers are wrong. The real answer is me.
