Best bassist?

RJ: welcome to TB!

Your question is like asking "what's the best food?" There is no best, only favorites and personal preferences. A better question for you to ask would be "who is your favorite bassist and why?"

If you would have asked that question, my reply would be the late Christopher Russell Edward Squire. His creativity, knowledge of the fretboard, and use of contrapuntal notes (both bass notes and vocal notes) have continued to impress me since I became a YES fan in 1971. And I finally got the opportunity to meet him in 2000 and talk with him about bass stuff. RIP Mr. Squire, bass deity! When it comes to playing bass, nobody even comes close! (IMO of course)

It's a joke question yes, but one could rank quarterbacks, cars etc. as a worst, better, best but when it comes to artists it can't work. It can't work because a quantitative consideration, who or what can play the most notes in 10 seconds or who or what can play the most notes in the greatest number of styles could be a computer, a midi machine. Who is ready to acknowledge a midi machine as anything more than a note generator? Qualities, e.g. tone, touch, attack, signature recognition (style) are like eye color. They don't relate to ranking.

  • I've been complimented because "I play less notes than the usual bassist". I've also been complimented because I play more notes than the usual bassist, though that was a different place.I assume this makes me optimal, and therefore, best.
