I'm super late to this party, but I liked the Ibanez Soundtank BP-5 Bass Compressor. They're long discontinued, made of plastic, the pots, jacks, and switches are pretty crummy, but they're usually dirt cheap. It's not a great compressor by any stretch, but for the price, its a fine little unit. The ovnilab review of this comp is spot on, imo.
I use an Empress on my main touring board but have a Joyo Avallon on another practice board at home and I can’t really tell the difference when it comes to just pure compression functions. Don’t overthink compression. You don’t need to spend a lot to get the benefits.
