I'm about to do a search for "Best Class-D amp for metal," because I am thinking about starting a new heavy project, and I am now thinking about how nice it would be to have my amp tucked into the pocket of my gig bag.

GK MB800 or MB800F would probably be my choice.
I'm a huge GK fanboi so if say the MB800, but any of the high powered class D heads should work. However, I'd stay away from the "cleaner sounding" brands (Glockenklang, Acoustic Image, Tecamp (?), Markbass) unless you are big into effects. I'd also recommend the new Mesa Subway
I am presently rocking a low, thick, dubby tone through a GK 700RB-II in my current band. I have always used a clean sound with no effects, even in metal and punk bands. I bought a BlowerBox a while back, which I might use to add a little dirt. Thanks for the input, everybody.

I play bass in a thrash metal band and use an svt-7. It is class D. I think it may be one of the few amps powerful enough to break through the fully mic'ed drums and marshall half stacks my guitar players use. So yeah, I like it. I use an 810 classic cab.
I just received my Hartke LH500 and played it for the first time at practice the other day.
I play in a metal band, think Lamb of God meets Black Sabbath, and the two guitarists are using two Peavey 6150 Heads with Marshall Cabs.
My bass sound cut through just fine, in fact I never took the thing over 5 on the volume dial and barely shifted the EQ.
Its a clean sound but don't let that deter you, lots of metal bassists use a clean bass sound e.g. Alex Webster, Shaun Malone, Brandon Brown etc.

I don't often play metal. But when I do, I prefer the GK MB800.

If you like your GK, but are looking for a smaller package, try the MB800 everybody mentioned. It'll do a low, thick, dubby tone no problem. I have one and I love it. You can crank the gain to get some grind, but I leave mine pretty clean and add a B3K for my dirt when needed.
No personal experience, but the Ashdown Rootmaster comes in an 800w version with built in distortion. I've liked some clips I've heard. 5 band eq. Compression. Sub-Oct. Worth a look.
