Best Emo/Post Hardcore Bassist?

Myspace.com/soundsofswami unfortunately we don't have a proper website yet, but someone's building one for us... apparently.

The bass is a little overly dubby, was using an NV215 and only the 15 got miced with a kick mic so no nice fat mids from there, and then got mixed with my heads DI, which is kinda crappy, kinda pleasant when you crank your sub, but you can't hear much other then when you do that. Gonna get him to use a flatter mic on my 15 and get my mid driver miced too next time. For our acoutic thing one of our not so acoutic songs I used my newer Laney head and got the 15 miced with an RE-20 and my mid miced with a 421, sounds awesome, should be a little clip on the acoustic link (we're now called foxes faux cos we're pretty much a different band now).

I know, Just wanted to put some input in.

What exactly makes post hc what it is? How is it different from hardcore? I try to be well educated in this field, But I'm right baffled. I know hardcore bands like Have Heart,Ceremony,Black Listed and Letdown, but what does post hardcore sound like?

Technically Hardcore is bands like Minor Threat, Youth of today, Gorilla Biscuits, Black Flag, Bad Brains etc

Basically, the short story is people got bored of pretentious rock stars and people started playing punk -> people got bored of punk becoming stale and having really naff values and people started the hardcore movement -> hardcore kids got bored of militant straight edgers and wanted to play different tunes too -> post-hardcore.

Musically post-hardcore's a weird mixture of Hardcore, Reggae, Funk and Rock, but mostly done in a really weird arty way. Fugazi is the best place to start, here a few of their more intense tunes;

Sounds moderately up my alley. Bang on with the short story though. I used to listen to all those bands except Gorilla biscuits, Then I branched off into metal/deathcore and haven't listened to hardcore is ages.

I don't think that's accurate. Post Hardcore was born out of the conscious decision to play less aggressive music in retaliation to the violence that at the time plagued the Washington DC hardcore scene. It didn't have anything to do with people being staightedge.

Violence connected to the militant sxe movement didn't come until later and was contrary to the founding ideals of sxe.

Yup pretty all over the place sometimes, never a dull moment with those guys, even their really slow stuff has my attention every second Argument is alot more chilled out and "accessible" dare I say it, about as accessible as Fugazi are gonna get anyway, awesome album.

Ah fair enough, knew it was something nasty to do with what was happening to the Hardcore scene. Obvious sXe isn't about violence though yeah, can't stand the militants, not as bad as bloody "hardliners" though, those guys are a bit tapped like...

I dislike those sxe folk, Mainly the militant ones. Sure, their ideals in theory are alright, but when they became violent, made no sense at all.

I know its off topic, but anyone here listen to metalcore and or deathcore? I mentioned it in my first post, but in another context.

Most of the sxe folk around here are arrogant pricks who have that 'holier-then-thou' attitude. We have had huge fights with them, becuase they believe their views are the only good ones and we are corrupt for our actions and our indulgences.

You on the other hand, have not preached to me at all, So no, I don't dislike you.

I agree. The original ideals of straightedge were about creating an acceptance of individual choice to not participate in the heavy peer pressure environment of taking drugs and drinking that existed in the punk and hardcore scenes of the 80's. In short, making kids who didn't want to drink or get high feel like it was ok and they wouldn't be social outcasts for the choice.

Somewhere along the way that idea of inclusion through sxe mutated to it's own form of elitism and exclusivity in some circles unfortunately, but there are those of us out there who still regard it as it was originally intended.

Yep, that's definitely become a big part of the attitude of many of the sxe kids out there. I think that has way more to do with insecure people seeking means in their lives to feel superior to those around them. Like any set of ideas or values, people will corrupt them to fit their own worldview. sxe is no different.
But that doesn't mean it gets defined the same way by everyone either. You might find the kids around you acting like jerks would be really frowned upon by sxe kids a city down the road from you.

Weezer invented Emo. Try me. I dare you.

No. No one "invented" emo. It was a word used to describe bands by zine writers who needed more synonyms in their music reviews. Since there isn't really an objective way of defining "emo" as a genre, then it came to be known by many things.

I never heard Weezer being called "emo" in the early days, it's only retro-actively have they been lumped into that genre. It seems every few years "emo" becomes the name of an entirely different genre. "Emo" at one time or another has meant Emotional Hardcore, Indie Rock, Alternative Rock, Noise Pop, Post-Hardcore, Post Punk, Pop Rock, and Pop Punk. This is why it's a worthless "tag" as a genre and when someone uses it in serious conversation about music I generally stop listening to what that person has to say.

Genres are strange anyhow, I mean look at Black Sabbath. If genres are used to help lump similar acts together then CURRENTLY it makes the most sense to call Sabbath "stoner rock" because that is the current name of the genre that they most closely resemble. However, old-school Sabbath fans scoff at the idea of calling them anything other than "metal," but what really do Sabbath have to do with anything that would ever be lumped into the catagory of "metal?" Very little. So, even though they are the "originators" of "metal" they don't even fit into their own genre based on current standards.

So, basically when you start over stressing genres things get really confusing. What it boils down to is that no genre is a badge of honor, nor is any genre a death sentence. It holds no significance in regards to anything other than convenience when comparing bands... a "if you like - you might like -"

But still, Weezer did those things. And all of those movements happened. We just didn't have a name for it then (although Jimmy Eat World was the first group to be openly labeled as 'emo,' and they hated it).

This is not true at all. There were several bands called "emo" before JEW and Weezer, like Rites of Spring and Moss Icon, the two bands that most punk "historians" consider the forefathers of emo. And they hated the term as well. Heck, even fugazi was called emo at times, wrong as that may be.

It seems that whenever there's an emo debate that you and I are always at odds, SnakeAnthony. But facts are facts. And I agree with Pearldiver, Andrew, and several others. Emo did not exist with Weezer. That's like saying jazz existed with Miles Davis or Charlie Parker.

Emo was, is, and probably always will be the defining description of this sweeping array of genres, and no one hated that more than its originators (Weezer, Jimmy Eat World), etc.

This sentence would make more sense if you switched out Weezer and Jimmy Eat World with Moss Icon and Rites of Spring.

but how has nobody mentioned jason black of hot water music????? definitely my favorite bass player in this genre, has amazing tone, great independent & melodic lines that really add to the song, all while keeping a great pocket w/ the drummer... two guys w/ very unique styles who worked so well together. "fuel for the hate game" is the album to hear if you haven't heard this band.

Probably because I don't consider HWM to be a post-hardcore band. He's definitely one of my favorite punk bass players though. I loved the tones he got out of that G&L ASAT bass and his fingers.

Sounds of Swami is pretty cool Rob. You remind me at times of a few different bands, but you do a good job of genre hopping within your song structures but have it still sound natural.

The city down from me as just the same. I personally think its the generation gap. I mean, You're not some punk 17yrold kid. Most of these are, and think the violent approach to getting their message across is the only one. Us group of nonsxe'rs are non-violent, unless we have to, as was the case when the sxe's confronted us. this is why we have the view point that sxe is nonsense. I understand the beliefs and morals and all the real ****, But its the violence and fighting that really makes it bs for us atleast.

I mean that in all respect though, I'm not calling you out, or calling your choice a ****** one, Its just all the sxe kids in my area are more into it for the acceptance and junk then the lifestyle of no drugs/drinking/smoking etc.
