The new American Deluxe 4 string
I have never before been a fan of fender basses at all, but this thing literally blew me away. i just could not put it down.
it was $1200 at GC. i think i might buy it.

Apart from an early 80's 62 reissue P I had, the 50's P I have now is astounding. Quality is as good and tone wise Id also take it over both the American deluxe P,jazz, and jazz V, I had any day of the week.
I wish I would have waited before buying a new bass. When I was looking the '07s were still out and I didn't like the MIA Jazz at all, plus the S1 switch sucked. I ended up getting the Geddy Lee over the MIA because of sound, looks, and playability. Now after reading about the '08 jazz, I think I would have went with it. I love the Geddy but the new '08 seems to be the "one". Oh well, I'm still happy with the GL....maybe next time.
Best Jazz bass? Lakland USA JO early serial #.

I have a 1988 Fender P-Bass (Japan) with EMGs in it. I loved the tone out of it...
...until I got my 2007 American Deluxe Jazz V (Alder/Maple). I tried a bunch of different Fenders--Marcus Miller 4, several Jazz basses, and the American Deluxe Percision--and the ADJV had the most range for me, and man, can this thing growl

I've got three Custom Shop Fenders, and they're all terrific: a 64 Jazz reissue (NOS), a 55 Precision reissue (relic) and a zero-fret masterbuilt limited edition Jazz. They're all superb! I'd have said the 64 Jazz is my favourite until very recently, but the zero-fret Jazz, bought just a few weeks ago, is awesome, and might be taking over as my #1. It's my first bass with active electronics, and the tonal range and power is enormous. And there's something raw and primeval about the simplicity of the 55 Precision.
I also have a '76 Precision, owned since new, which I love, and an '06 American Series Jazz, which is a very fine bass for the money. I really don't understand comments about the S1 switch such as those above - I know no-one seems to like it on the Precision, but on the Jazz it offers a useful option, albeit not a genuine P tone. But if you don't like it, don't use it.

My favorite was a '77 Precision that was beat to hell, but I've played plenty of wonderful Fenders.
The best one is the on I'm playing at the moment.

But when I'm playing my 2000 MIM Jazz, I like it at least as well if not better. The fact that it's worth 1/10th what the '63 is doesn't enter into it.
...and my Jay Turser JTB-401 ('54 P clone) holds its own with either one. Even though it's worth nothing compared to the '63:
They're all good if you take the time to set them up right. The rest is in your head. For sentimental reasons, the '63 is my favorite but only because I've owned it since 1967.
