Best Funk Album Ever

Dang, four pages in until I found a shout out to Curtis Mayfield. Something wistful in so many of his songs make him DEEPER than any other funk artist, imho. I've been listening to his first seven albums on YouTube for the last two weeks and they get better with each repeated listen.

In 1970, James Brown and the JBs were in Lagos Nigeria. This is the lineup that created “Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine,” “Super Bad,” “Soul Power,” and “Talkin’ Loud and Sayin’ Nothing.” Pretty funky stuff. Arguably some of Brown’s most intense funk recordings.

While in Lagos, many of the JBs spent several nights catching Fela Kuti’s show at his Shrine nightclub. Here’s a couple of quotes from Bootsy about the experience:

“ [Fela] had a club in Lagos, and we came to the club and they were treating us like kings. We were telling them they're the funkiest cats we ever heard in our life. I mean, this is the James Brown band, but we were totally wiped out! That was one trip I wouldn't trade for anything in the world.”

“Well actually I thought THEY were the greatest, period. Even before I got into James Brown’s band, the James Brown band was number one to me. But once I got there and saw Fela and them, then I had second thoughts about it. I mean, seriously. The James Brown band reminded me of that same non-stop groove, you know: you gotta move. And then when I heard these cats, it was like another dimension of that. A dimension that I had never experienced before. And it had a deeper feel to me. I couldn’t explain it, you know, but it was something I had been involved with but not as deep. When I heard them, that was the deepest level you could get. That’s the only way I can explain that. Not that I’m doggin’ myself along with the rest of the guys, but that’s the way I felt. When I heard that, it was like, ‘Man, this is IT. We gotta try to be like this!’ And I knew we couldn’t!”

Fela is cool but that band didn't have anything on the JBs. I think Bootsy was into the message and probably the drugs -- he has said he was taking a lot of them during that time including acid.

No disrespect was intended about that first Brick album, Good High, but you can just tell that they had a little more time to work on the second. Or money. Or both..... :D Call me crazy Jim but I prefer EWF's earlier albums to the September & Boogie Wonderland era. Tee Nine Chee Bit is an example. Raw....

Chris Wood from Medeski Martin and Wood. MMW can get a little space-jammy, but their work with Scofield is more composition-driven. A personal favorite is Scofield's album "A Go Go", where MMW plays the role of super-funky rhythm section--they lay down some stanky grooves on that record!

I agree with this.

I actually started listening to a lot of Fela after reading Bootsy's remarks. IMO, Fela's sound is bigger, but not deeper. They're both great, but it was James Brown's sparse, tight arrangements that hooked me. Nobody ever did more with high, tight rhythm guitar, in-the-pocket bass, perfectly punctuated horns and understated drums than James and his JBs in the early to mid '70s. "Sex Machine" is basically the blueprint for a huge amount of '70s funk, R&B and disco, which of course begat many other styles.

Hey, I still stand by what I said in my earlier post. Fela's crew was just as good as the JB's if not better. Now, it was definitely a different groove and I can understand why someone might prefer one more than the other. Me? I like both.

Fela's son, Seun, inherited his father's band if I'm not mistaken. Check this....

Yeah! That's what I'm talkin' 'bout. Love Wood on upright or slab. Been a big fan of MMW for a while, and a fan of Scofield for a really long time. An excellent match MMW&Sco. Another geetahrisst I like MMW hooked up with is Marc Ribot. Thanks for the tip, I've only seen clips on Youtube of Sco with MMW. Will get "A Go Go"!
