Best Gear Purchase in 2017

I had three great buys this year. The first was a U.S. made SVT-CL with a U.S. made 410HLF cab. I paid $950 for both and the guy threw in a bunch of cables and a guitar stand. The other buy was a U.S. made SVT 810 cab with a heavy duty cover for $400. Everything works and sounds great. The third was a new Tech 21 VT Bass Deluxe. It usually sells for $269. I found one on sale for $189.

Last November I left Zane Guitars as their sales rep and artist rep. I had at my house I think around 14 or 15 guitars. The company told me I could keep them so I sold some off and traded the rest for about 12k to 13k in gear at Guitar Center. My favorite acquisition from all of that was my Music Man 30th Anniversary Stingray 5. I absolutely love that bass and will never get rid of it.

This past year I also really started liking P basses after never really liking them in the past. I had Killer B Guitars build me one but with some things on it slightly different from Fender. I had Nordstrand NP4a pickups put in it, a natural, unfinished neck made for it that is as smooth as silk and for the hardware, I am a huge fan of Hipshot so I had a Hipshot bridge and tuners added to the bass. Since having that bass, I have developed a new appreciation for passive basses and have had a blast playing my P bass. That bass has probably been played the most this year.

For a year where I set out to buy nothing, it really didn't turn out that way. I picked up a 1970 Precision, a Spector NS4CRFM, a Carvin LB75, a Darkglass B3K, a Trace Elliot Transit B, and an SWR Henry the 8x8. But for the greatest bass purchase of 2017, I'm going to declare a tie:
  1. In LaBella Low Tension Flexible Flats I finally found a flatwound string that works for me.
  2. With Dunlop Super Bright SS strings, I found a roundwound string that sounds great and is inexpensive enough that I don't try to stretch a little more "life" out of a string that tone-wise should be being replaced.

I didn’t buy anything in 2016

For 2017, I bought 2 items (actually 3 per my final paragraph.):

I was fortunate to locate a Greg Curbow Petite 6

I was also able to locate a New/Old Stock EBMM Bongo HS 6 in my favorite PDN Honey Roasted finish.

I don’t know if this counts, but I’ve fully paid for an FBass VF6-PJ Fretless in 2017 but it has yet to begin production, so it will be a 2018 bass.

I'm gonna have to say this little guy:

Now permanently moored atop a Hartke 2-10 cabinet in my bedroom, I find that all of my 8 basses are getting a lot more regular play-time. I somehow managed to buy two more bass amps, two more cabinets, and 4 more basses this year, but for me this bedroom amp was really the MVP (most valuable purchase!) of the year 2017...
