Best HPF (High Pass Filter) on the market?

If HPFs are the best thing since sliced bread, why don't the large scale pedal makers (like boss, MXR) produce one? HPFs seem to be a US phenomenon. Here in the boondocks the only one I can think of which is easily available is the one in the Fishman Platinum Pro.

Shrug... Because HPF and LPF aren't as sexy as a fancy new fuzz or multi effects pedal? It's hard enough convincing someone to buy a graphic or parametric EQ, despite how much difference they can make, let alone HPF and LPFs, if you are slinging gear at Guitar Center/Local Music Shops.

That being said, I am starting to see HPFs show up as a feature on many more mainstream pedals in some form. IE High Pass Filter control on distortion, compressors, and modulation pedals. Lots of multi effects are starting to include them as well.

They are starting to show up baked into more bass amps lately too.

HPF for bass is not a new concept. For example Motown engineers used an 80hz HPF on James Jamerson. Most studio gear and PA systems have HPF's, and pro engineers know how to use them. The only thing that's new and trendy, is the concept of having HPFs in pedal format with the tap of a toe. They are especially handy for ampless situations (because a speaker cabinet is kind of like an HPF + LPF) such as when using in-ear monitors, or for home computer recording direct to the audio interface.
 
I had an Fdeck III and by mistake turned down the volume. It took a minute to figure out what was wrong as the band was playing. I recently got a Micro Thumpinator and it does a great job of eliminating excessive cone movement and is completely fool proof. It also appears to me to be more transparent than the other hpfs I've tried, the Fdeck and a Broughton.

Shrug as I'm only guessing, and it seems pretty dumb to me that they aren't more commonly available too.

Not like they are new tech, they've been around for decades, and on mixing boards and high end audio gear for ages. Not just in the US either.

Isn't the bass knob on an amp a HPF?

Honestly: What's the difference between HPF and just turning down the bass frequency? There must BE a difference. A lot of guys on TB love their Broughton.

In addition to them working in a much different manner using an HPF also greatly increases the efficiency of your amp because it's not trying to reproduce ultra low frequencies that are for the most part useless and just muddy everything up.

Get one and try it. Set the HPF somewhere between 40-60hz for starters. Not only will it clean up the low end of your signal but you can actually boost the bass on your amp and it'll make it tighter, punchier and richer. Then try it without the HPF and roll the bass off on your amp. You'll end up with an emptier and thinner sound that only gets worse the more you roll it off. Once you have one and find yourself in a couple of difficult rooms acoustically or a sound guy that loves to push the low frequencies and muck everything up you can quickly and effectively eliminate those problems. I've run into as many sound guys that like to icepick the bass as well and that's why I opted for the HPF/LPF combo pedal. They can't push frequencies they're not getting :D

Before I got it I was in the "seriously...how much difference can it make category". Now that I have one... if you were to tell me I was only allowed to have one pedal at gigs the Broughton HPF/LPF would be the one I keep. Since owning it I haven't run into a room that I can't tame and find a good sound in and I don't have to do it through chasing my eq knobs around. Are there rooms/situations that I don't NEED it....for sure....but I still love setting it around that 40hz mark anyway to keep it tight and punchy and it's PURE GOLD when you end up in a difficult situation be it the room or the sound guy.

HPF has generally been the first thing on a mixer board channel after the input since...well... Forever.

Yes, I use one & it is very effective & transparent, it also gives you a 1dB increase from 30Hz up to 60 Hz, nice.

Not yet mentioned but the f'Dck HPF III has two filters and it works great for me.

"The "12+12" filter curve is two filters in one. The first filter has a fixed corner frequency of 35 Hz, and 12 dB/octave slope. The second filter is adjustable from 35 to 140 Hz, and also has a 12 dB/oct slope. Thus it always has 24 dB/oct slope below 35 Hz. I designed the Series 1 and 2M filter (same circuit in both) for double bass amplification, to tame the infrasonic "thump" produced by the acoustic instrument, which interacts poorly with the low frequency excursion behavior of ported speakers. Interest in a 24 dB/oct filter came from electric bassists who are experimenting with the latest high-performance speakers, to avoid driving the system at frequencies below the port tuning frequency."

"The variable high pass filter ranges from 25 to 190 Hz with a slope of 12 dB/octave. An additional fixed filter is set at 25 Hz at 12 dB/octave to remove subsonic artifacts, which can help protect speakers from over excursion."

True but only their $170 unit with a built in DI.
The other three Broughton units only have a single filter.
