You mean best live bands generally (as in they always put on a great performance), rather than the band containing the best bassist you've seen live? Or top 3 best ever gigs?

Third...Dillinger Escape Plan, Liam Wilson
Second...Clutch, Dan Maines
First...Meshuggah, Dick Lovgren
Incidentally, all seen at the same venue

Alice in Chains and In Flames are really good if you're into those styles of music. Slightly Stoopid is also really fun.
Best shows I've seen:
Red Hot Chili Peppers (small venue, early on Mother's Milk tour in 1989);
AC/DC in the 1980's, and again in 2001; and
The Who ("Quadrophenia" tour in 1997).
But jeez, there are just so many other great ones, like King Crimson, Los Lobos, John Fogerty, Metallica (1989), The Stones, U2 (1983), Tool, Page/Plant, etc.
Based on audio recordings and video, I'd say the best live rock bands were probably The Who in their prime with Keith Moon, and AC/DC in the late Bon Scott era, both of which I missed. The Chili Peppers show I caught in 1989 was on that level, but I'm not sure they were consistently at that level, even in their prime.

Best live bands of all time?...wow, subjective...but OK lets see, I'll have to go by the best live show's I've personally seen (or can remember)...IMO:

1: Pink Floyd: 1970 & 1971. 2,000 seat arena. First surround sound live concerts.
2: Led Zeppelin: Early 1970. Their first headline concert in North America with Vanilla Fudge
3: Eagles: Live in Melbourne. Unfortunately only seen them on DVD, still no less awesome.
4: Eric Clapton: 2006. Not sure who played bass but you know he was an incredible player.
5: k d lang: 2005 Hymns of the 49th Parallel tour. Been in love with her voice since her cow punk days. I still get shivers every time she sings.

4. Jesus Lizard - David Sims
5. I'm not a big Iron Maiden Fan, but Iron Maiden Live is Amazing. - Steve Harris
6. RHCP - Flea
7. Meltbanana - Rika Hamamoto
8. This Local Band called Scorpion V.S. Tarantula that I can't seem to get enough of. Must see live because their stage presence really Makes the Band. - None until recently, then - Tana Satana
9. Quicksand - Sergio Vega
10. Fugazi always better live! - Joe Lally
