Ric...if it is good enough for Lemmy...Also Gibson Ripper. Stingray 5 When I was playing metal I used an old Peavey Fury my friend's black Ric with the binding covered in electrical tape (his doing, not mine) and a Spector (import) 5 string. The Peavey T-40 is what the bass player in my '80s metal cover band uses. Gotta love those old, cheap Peavey USA basses.

5 string Spector Euro LX. Mine sounded like it'd destroy people's face when I auditioned with a truly brutal metal band. I wouldn't know what genre of metal they were....thrash/black/death metal mebbe? It was loud and hurt my ears, but was fun.

Ok, Lets have it like this: The L2000 is the swiss army knife of bass, but the P bass is that realy big and sharp knife that will cut through anything 
I saw the Status Buzzard bass being mentioned, and that is truly one of the basses I would sell almost all of my gear for (Not the P basses, ofcourse) It just looks so great, and it sounded so awsome in The Ox's hands!

I was lost in the mix and didnt feel very free, so now its back to 4 string P basses, and noe more Jazz based basses in metal

I know that one day, I will have to get one. I love the way they sound and feel. But right now, it's too expensive. If I were to look into a bass in the $1500 sorta range, I'd probably be looking at a Euro Spector or something (they look sexy, plus I'm curious about the TonePump and how that sounds, although I'm not an EMG fan right now).
Somehow, I'm sure I'll wind up with one, though. And it will be good

Nice Snakes and Arrows shirt, Thunder_Fingers!! I have that same problem on my Ibanez Roadstar 5 string...It's the most black metal bass ever (and it has the perfect sound and feel for Marduk- or Melechesh-type stuff...think Azrael 
) and it's good for more straightforward riffing and crushing bones and grinding meat, but it's not a good jammer, I don't think.

You don't need the expensive one Fender Japan are cheaper and often more trustable than an US P bass, The mexico's are also great basses.

If I had the itch to get a Fender bass, I'd find a Japanese one from the mid 80s, probably and get it...then do all sorts of wacky stuff to it.
Or I'd probably just wind up getting another Ibanez Roadstar

But hey, I had my 77 P bass (With flats) to practice ones, and I have never before or after felt so well placed in the mix, but I didnt want to have it tuned down to C so.. I bet this P bass will sit just as well.
I have been through all this and the conclusion is:
Metal = P bass is your friend, they have the natural mid bump where the mid bump is lacking in metal.
I just happen to be watching Megadeth in concert on HDNet right now. On "Betrayed By Lust", their bass player (James Lomenzo, I think?) broke out a Marcus Miller Jazz bass.... Definitely surprised me..

I agree!! It's the mids that give you all the scream and sustain...so many people cut it out entirely. On my amp's graphic EQ, I have a little mid boost nipple going on and using P bass-type instruments sounds so great through it (a little plain, but that's what it's for--it'll be my clean channel when I'm running it in stereo)!
It's not just the P bass, but a bass with precision pickups, if my Exploiters have anything to say

That sounds really hot, man. I'd use a DiMarzio 'cos I'm goofy like that. Only problem is I feel like I fight P-shaped basses every step of the way trying to play them standing up...only Explorers seem to scratch that Amon Amarth-style headbanging-while-playing itch.
If it weren't for that, I'd have some kind of plain old P bass already.
