So you are also using the jazz pickup as a thumbrest.
I don't see my bass as a P/J, but as a P/thumbrest.

Yeah that's what I love about it! I got serious GAS for a Destroyer bass after watching Iron Maiden's "Beast Over Hammersmith '82" DVD and I found one in great condition on eBay. It's incredible. That pickup is a howler!! Nothing like DiMarzios.
It's from 1983. I'm going to put a Kahler trem on it, then, eventually, a DiMarzio X2N-7 (like Darkstrike--expensive thumb rest
), and as I may have babbled before, wire it in stereo and add a switch to do some coil-tapping action on the X2N. It'll be a bit of work, but it'll be awesome!!!

That is until I also place a X2N-7 on my bass.

A lot of mojo around those things.

Cheers to precision pickups! Aren't they just spiffy? Thanks. I love it to death. It makes me sad I can't play it for about another week or so.
The strings are really bendy (I've got really light strings on there to make it extra slinky-feeling) because of the short scale length and the minimum of resistance/friction between the strings and the nut.
Unlike precision shaped basses, I can actually stand up playing an Explorer-style bass. It just feels natural. Plus it looks wicked. I'm prone to think that because they have so much extra mass that they vibrate better as well. You've just got more...stuff!!

Then, it's buying parts: X2N-7, jacks, pots, switches, wiring, pickup ring, and a router. Then another Kahler trem. I want to have it done by the end of my winter break (Jan 5). And it will be SO METAL!!!

Why do you not promote the Spector as a good metal bass?
I've been tempting to try one of these, since they get so much praise as good basses for metal.

So do you (Yamaha=droolable)!I forgot about it, to tell you the truth.
I have a little difficulty promoting it for anything because of the pickups. It looks incredible. It feels wonderful and it plays like nothing else (really wide, glossy neck). But the pickups...well, I like to use strings until one of them snaps. When they're dead, they sound just as good as when they're new to me, but different and I know what I can expect from them, unlike brand new ones (waiting for them to settle, etc). And the EMGs, they don't deliver what I want them to.They're too clean, too empty, and not loud enough, really. They sound like dead thudding when I'm playing with a guitarist. And the lowest three strings are really low tension compared to the top three because of the way they come off of the nut from the tuners (at least, I think that's why). It might all be because I haven't changed the strings since I got it at the beginning of summer, after it had sat in the local Guitar Satan for two months...yuck. The lowest 3 frets are really messed up (the guy before me had it in A standard and had the action SUPER high). But I still love it. I'll get it to work for me some time--just the way I want it, but in the mean time, I have other projects to concentrate my attention and resources on.
It has it's place, but I can't pick it up any day and feel right at home and shred away. It takes a little work and it wears you out fast. Really fast. But it does have super clear low notes.
But it's very, very KRIEG!!!
