Best metal for bass?

OK, so we beat the bass for metal thing to death, obviously. But for the aspiring metal bassist who really wants to find his metal tone, what are some good records/songs/bands who demonstrate a good metal tone. Generally, I feel that metal bass gets lost in the mix and for all the radical three finger galloping, stretching your hand across nine frets gymnastics, its nearly impossible to hear. Anyone?

I submit:

God Forbid for excellent metal playing, pretty easy to pick up on recordings.

Nile on BSOV, some really incredible playing in there but takes some digging to find the sound in the mix.

Oh, and that dude who played with Iron Maiden. Not sure of his name, but you can sometimes hear his playing and he sounds like a pretty good player

Two minutes to midnight by Iron Maiden..... awesome. Warpigs is another.

After I posted this I got to thinking, its usually the "older" metal we assosciate with specific bass sounds. I was thinking of more modern metal of the black/death/grind what have you. I can't disagree with the above though.

There's a lot of good bass cutting through on some Anthrax stuff, some of my faves are on Persistence of Time.

I forgot Slayer too. Kind of a typical metal bass tone IMO, but you can hear it.

IF I had to pick a type of bass ... you really can't go wrong with a good P/J.

Good call as well. I'd submit just about anything on Youthanasia as well. Not most megadeth purist's first choice of album, but the recording quality was above and beyond most of the earleir albums and the bass sounded great on that one.

Great example. Though I am not a big fan of the band, there is a very distinct bass tone there and some pretty good playing even though I took a while to realize it myself.

These days, Maiden wouldn't even qualify as metal. They have melodies, chord structure and you can hear the bass notes.
