Best metal for bass?

I'm definitely with the guys mentioning Between the Buried and Me, Opeth, Mastodon, and some of the other prog influenced metal bands. Their bass tones tend to stand out more than a lot of metal music.

One I don't think I've seen yet is Down. Rex's bass tone on their albums is pretty massive. It definitely stands out more than it did with Pantera.

And to cite another band from the Phil Anselmo side project list, Superjoint Ritual. Hank Williams III gets some cool throbbing tones with them and he can get down on a bass. Nothing too technical, but fitting.

Congrats on a great thread so far especially the OP who has kept the tone civil and informative! When grindcore was mentioned it made me wish that Pig Destroyer had a bassist so I could mention them (which I did anyway)!
And if were mentioning Tool, HOF, and Neurosis I think The Melvins newer stuff should be included.

Melvins? I was not expecting that. I am not terribly familiar with them apart from seeing them live once (not going to get into that). Any specific material you are thinking of?

When I play solid state I usually model alot of my tone off of GC Green. Boss HM-2 all the way.

Rex got lost in some Pantera stuff, but when you could hear him I thought he did have an awesome groove and tone.

You mean like Geezer Butler and Steve Harris? That "specific" tone is a Fender P bass. Frank Bello of Anthrax was another P player.

Then there's older metal with a different specific bass sound, like -

Angelripper - Sodom
Joey DeMaio - Manowar
Blacky - Voivod
Dave Holocaust (RIP) - Destructor
Peter Steele - Carnivore
D.D. Verni - Overkill

Note 4 of the above were Ric players.

I was thinking of more modern metal of the black/death/grind what have you.

Good points all, but I never really thought of Marduk as particularly bass-centric. Another band I take in small doses. Don't know a whole lot about Defleshed, am investigating now.

Wow... This bass tone is unbelievable! Sounds straight out of a Jaco album. I usually prefer grindy, slightly-overdriven-power-tube-y sound, but as it turns out I'm also a sucker for that clean, mid-heavy fusion tone. Two thumbs up!

Oh, tone-wise I completely agree. It's just that I can't stand Fender ergonomics.

(also, my Ibanez SR can make a decent imitation of that by favoring the bridge pickup, boosting mids with a narrow Q and cutting some highs)

I think Spiral Architect has the win so far on bass sound in metal despite the fact that a few commentors on youtube were complaining that it was "too prominent". The singing isn't my favorite, but if I can listen to Nevermore I can handle that

Gorod There are a ton of French bands doing some really good stuff lately.
Pitbulls in the Nursery More French madness. Awesome album lots of tempo changes and awesome jazz influenced weirdness.

Had to post the link, I hope it works. They are called Across The Sun. We did a gig with them a few months back and after seeing them play i was blown away. They had a cool bass sound IMO and awesome music overall. The keyboard I could live without but it is what it is. They just signed with Metal Blade and I can't stop spinning thier disc.

I would love to hear what others think of them.

Unsane Not really "metal", but sick bass tonez Their older stuff is a bit heavier.

They have some of the sickest album covers I have ever seen lol. I remember hearing them when I was in middle school. I didn't really get it then but a cool band for sure.

Across the Sun sounded really good. The whole 'metalcore' thing got stale for me a few years back. They sound tight though. Excellent production!
