Best metal for bass?

I find that to be very frustrating...just wanted to see how many other metal bands had to deal with this?

I know we have had to from both ends of the spectrum though. I'm not sure who to compare our music too but I find it to be pretty straight up modern metal singing, screaming(all kinds death metal screams to Chino style crazy high screams), fast riffs, slow riffs, disco drums, double kick insano drums. But then we get stuck doing a show with a "rock and roll" band and all the other bands on the bill are metalish bands or that punky metal crap, whatever thats called. Then sometimes you get stuck with some terrible death metal band where the vocalist is terrible and the music is composed just wrong.

But thats the name of the game. I guess my 2 cents on the bass tone thing would definately be Mudvayne, Across The Sun are my favorites now. Here is another thing does Primus count? They arent really metal but they are heavy as hell sometimes. I guess maybe they aren't but the bass is killer.

This just reminds me of a friend who told me that 5 Finger Death Punch was the "heaviest **** he's ever heard".



Open your ears a little and listen to some of the bands in this thread, you'll see that Tool is really a different category.

I can't get over how annoying the singer is in FFDP. And heaviest thing ever. UGH! I don't think much of them at all.

I could have sworn I read somewhere that Meshuggah did away entirely with the bass when they switched to 8 strings, but I can't find it anywhere, so I guess that was bogus.

Still, as much as I love that band, I wouldn't say the basslines are all that noticeable.

Oh, and that dude who played with Iron Maiden. Not sure of his name, but you can sometimes hear his playing and he sounds like a pretty good player

They remind me of a watered down more modern Pantera with less grove. Not my thing either. I've heard worse on the radio though

What style of metal are you looking for in general?
You referenced God Forbid, but then mentioned death/grind. Which confused me. So do you want to stick with Soilwork, Caliban, Heaven Shall Burn type stuff?

Well I intentionally left it kind of open, since no one is generally any more specific when they ask what bass for metal

I am not really well versed on my sub genre metal lingos, I just go with what I like. The super extreme grindy stuff I have to take in small doses as I said. My current metal mix I am listening to consitsts of Nevermore, Opeth, Anathema, Slayer, Deicide, Cryptopsy, My Dying Bride, In flames, The Haunted, Nile, Morbid Angel, COB, and a couple of CoF songs (guilty pleasure) so as you can see I run all over.

I am hoping enough bands get covered that a kid can come in here, get some varying ideas for metal bass playing and use that to tailor a sound. I already have the best bass for metal and can find my sound just fine

Edit: and plus 1000 to the FFDP thing. My boss listens to their Bad Co. cover on his Ipod about 10 times a day and it gets REALLY old.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am always open to new stuff. Even though I am pretty picky on what I like, I do like to hear wide range of stuff. Grind is definetly hit or miss with me, but when its done right I can really dig it. The problem is I have enough of a hair metal streak in me that I need the outlandish guitar solos and bizarre temp changes, so the 2 minute blast beat thing wears on me kind of quickly. That and some of it is just so gory it's a parody of itself.

I know what you mean. Grind has to been seen live to really appreciate it, at least for me. Thats why Porno Grind is so awesome, they cant really take themselves serious
Outlandish guitar solos and temp changes are always good. I'm more into the tempo changes now. The guitar wankery wears on me quick these days. To much treble hahaa

The End That singer was only on this album. He was in another band called Mare, that only put out 1 amazing demo. I'll go find a song.
Here they are Mare One of the best Demos if not album I've heard in a while. To bad I found this way after they broke up. Oh well.

Yeah, progressive hard stoner rock perhaps? I dunno, as broad a brush as the metal thing is, I don't think "real" metalheads nor Tool would consider them metal.

MARE FTW! I dig the raw recording sound of the demo in that "Anisette" song. Great vibe. I have to find a copy of this I can brun and listen to on a real system. Reminds me of MDB from the ATFW days, but a bit more "howl" than "growl". Good stuff for sure.

How about Agalloch folky experimental black metal. Dont worry the vocals aren't raspy high pitched stuff... all the time. Great band, great arrangements. The bass is a little buried at times. But not to bad.

Oh I've liked a bunch but they got my attentions. After poking around into some of their other songs there were a few that were a bit ambient for my tastes, but good none the less.


I have had limited exposure to Augury, but great suggestion. The song in that link I had never heard, but I am glad I have now.

I have to give my obligatory shout out for Acid Bath. Not really serious cutting tone. But you can hear him pretty well on When the Kite String Pops. An album I feel all metal heads should hear. Something for everybody. I'm sure you've already heard the album

I don't know if they've been mentioned yet, but Intronaut is awesome. Their bass player plays a Pedulla Pentabuzz fretless. Newest album Valley of Smoke is amazing!

dozicus, you are a wealth of great stuff! IT looks like once I get my home computer fixed I am going to need a new external hard drive for all this stuff I have never/seldom heard.

Intronaut? Metal played on one of my all time favorite sounding fretless basses? Yes please.

Also, a little OT (but hell it's my thread), does anyone remember the band Revielle? If so, anyhting about the bassist? I liked them a great deal.
