I know I just started a thread about headphones for playing and studio recording, just wondering if you can point me in the right direction. Good Studio Monitors in the 150-250$ price range. Is this possible?
well, 'monitors' at that price point are not REALLY going to be 'monitors' as such. monitors are neutral, flat speakers (well, there is of course a lot more to it than that but thats the basic premise!) and that does unfortunately cost a bit. The price cuts in cheap monitors end up with a speaker that although might be pretty good is rarely comparable in the job it does to 'real' monitors.
So, I'd go more towards buying a nice set of good speakers that make you enjoy the music a lot, and then spend a lot of time listening to music on them to learn how they treat sound. Thats very possible for your budget.
If it were me I would look out for speakers from the old 70's company acoustic research, they go for dirt cheap (like as low as £10, so $20?), sound great and are very flat and neutral surprisingly. At the time they were quite expensive speakers and the fashion at the time was flat-neutral hi-fi speakers so they do the job. you'll need an amp as well.
we have a pair of AR18's at work, which sit alongside a pair of monitors costing £15'000

and they are still very useful speakers! I like them so much I bought a pair for home. AR18's are a bit pricier because they are the ones that are famous for being 'almost monitors' but still within your budget for a pair in good condition!
PS I would advise avoiding the behringer monitors...
