Fender , Sadowsky, Sire, BassMods, Dingwall, Squier, .... just depends on what you want .

I think Sadowsky has a pretty impressive take on the jazz bass right now. Basses at numerous price points that all deliver amazing quality. When I turned 50, I wanted a very specific 5 string jazz bass. I went Sadowsky NYC. 5 years later, it still is my most favorite jazz bass I've ever played.

When I wanted to buy a Jazz, I was thinking for some time about differences between active and passive Jazzes. Marcus Miller and Geddy Lee both play Jazzes, but their sound is very different. I decided, that I'm after more raw, rock timbre, so I went with a passive Fender Player.

My favorites so far are Warmth. There are many I haven't tried and many I have. Also there was a magic 2000 Fender American Standard I owned a while back that changed my whole attitude about Jazz Basses.

Sandberg makes great basses. And their Jazz style basses are IMO the best value for money out there

I don't think there is a 'best' but do know whom I'd go to if I were to have one made, but that's just me implementing options( neck profile, string spacing at bridge and nut etc).

They're a bit of a rarity, but the Fender Squier series (no, not squiers, the fender squier series, made by fender, in a fender plant in mexico) punch waaaaay above their weight class. I've got a Squier series jazz, and an american deluxe Jazz V, and while I can certainly tell the difference blindfolded (one of them's got a whole extra string and an active preamp) I certainly couldn't tell you which is "better."

There are lots of answers, depending on what do you exactly need, but if you don't exactly know - what, the Fender would match.

For me the best JB is a Fender Jazz Bass if you can find yourself a really good one. Not all Fenders are created equal. And every so often you stumble across one that's just total magic.

I can only comment on jazz bases I've actually played: I played a Suhr at Gruhn in Nashville a couple years ago, and if I'd had $2,500 in my wallet I probably would have bought it. Felt great, sounded great. Next would be a Fender American series from 2012--the first ones to have the custom shop pups. If I were still playing 34" scale, I'd still have it. Ergonomically and sonically delightful. Last would be a Lakland Skyline DJ-4, or whatever they call it now. Again, beautiful sound, super-comfy neck, and, like the other two, an overall impression of great fit and finish.
