I really like my 1974 Jazz bass. 4 bolt neck, fat beefy deep neck, sounds great. I am totally a P-bass guy, but this particular jazz bass is fantastic.

Personally, I believe a jazz bass is very subjective. You are more apt to find a comfortable precision, but a Jazz, you have to really find the one. Take your time, pick up a number of them and find your Jazz. However, it is worth it. Good luck.
A few months ago, I got to play someone's 1964 Fender Jazz Bass. So far, it is the bass with the sweetest sound my ears have ever heard from a bass and it possesses the smoothest neck I have ever held in my hand.

Fender and Sire --- as I have always owned Fenders and currently have a Sire as well and have the most experience with........Im sure if I owned a Sadowsky I'd include that as well........I never owned any other type of J bass to give an unbiased report

I think for traditional jazz, which I know is a broad category, I think Eastwood captures the raw emotion from the origin styles from Chicago, New York, New Orleans, and Kent.
The day after you purchase the best jazz bass you will find a better one.

What is a Jazz Bass? Narrow neck? Two single-coils? Offset body-style? An "F" logo on the headstock? If so, then a Fender is the only choice.
Same thing with the "P"... Is it the pickup type and position? the thicker neck?
I believe (currently, subject to change) that the finest PRODUCTION Jazz Bass is the American Geddy Lee Signature model. Please note that this is an opinion.

The original jazz bass design concept is nowadays fairly well incarnated by the instrument's produced by the Fender Custom Shop.
Notwithstanding, there are many modern take on the original design which sound impressive .. Sadowsky, Sandberg, Fodera (yes, Fodera) ..
