Highly recommend dropping this requirement. I have a 2012 Squier Classic Vibe P that I purchased used for $300. Best bass I've had in alomst 27 years of playing.

View attachment 4166511 This was listed for $250 at my local music store. I talked them into a 10% discount and they gave me 60% of what they would list my Squier VM Fretless Jazz for as trade value. I walked out of there with this fantastic P-Bass for less than $50 with tax. Best P I’ve ever played.
It’s a 1986-1987 Ibanez Roadstar II RB630. I added TI Jazz Flats, Dunlop Straplocks and the chrome knobs from my Squier Jazz. Eventually I’ll get some new pickguard screws and maybe a new pickup. Until then it works great!
A lot boils down to the neck profile for me....i mean cmon P bass types are all over the entire planet so make sure the neck is what you want.
80's Peavey Fury have J necks while other P types may have more slender necks than Fender.
The other thing for me is weight....cant deal with over 8 lbs at all these days....other than that, parts can be changed easily on a P bass
Harley Benton gear is highly under rated Imo! The stock pickups sound good, and being cheap, there'd be money left over to throw in an upgrade if you so desire, the necks are solid and they even come strung with Daddario xl's for around $120 dollars. I love my HB Jazz bass and will probably order a few more before its over!
Thank you all. Ive wrote down a bunch of your suggestions and going to go into Guitar Center and give them all (or most of them) a try before making a final decision. that Yamaha BB234 looks really nice by the way. love the wood finish
I looked this up ad found it at $449. for a vintage V4.
The lowest I could find on Reverb was $300. for a used V4 icon model
...i didn't noticed that. Sorry. They have raised the prices, i think. I remember them for 249,- Eur. new, a few years ago...Don't listen to this OP. A pickup shorted to ground on both sides won't produce a signal. When you turn the volume down, its output is zero. You could attach a billion grounded pickups to your bass and it would have absolutely no impact on the sound of the pickup that is on.
Edit: Well maybe not a billion - the billion parallel pots would short out the signal![]()
Knowing anything about how signals work knows youre wrong.
But keep proving my point
Too bad they have the old headstocks.Guitar Center is having their Presidents Day sale right now. You could probably score a nice G&L LB-100 Tribute for around $400 if you call them directly for a 20% off coupon! https://www.guitarcenter.com/GL/Tribute-LB-100-Electric-Bass-Brazilian-Cherry-Fingerboard.gc
