Best pedal related purchase. EBS PG Flat Patch Cable.

I have gotten tons of great advice and recommendations from this forum no doubt but searching for “flat patch cables” led me to pure gold. After seeing the EBS cables listed in the first bajillion search results I knew I had found what I was looking for. So I bit the bullet and got several. Two of my smaller boards were cleaned up and allowed me to add another pedal to each. They ain’t cheap but nothing dealing with effects really is. Thanks TB effects forumites. Ya done good!

That’s what puts me off spending £5-6 per cable. I’ve been using DIY pancake & Donner cables just fine.

I hear that. I’m not handy with a soldering iron so I don’t think about those things when making a purchase but that’s probably a very useful skill to have. I’ll check out the Donner. These are very expensive indeed.

I picked up 6 for £15. They’ve been great (around 8 months) so far. My DIY ones I just a large pack of cheapo pancake jacks and recycled the plethora of busted instrument cables. Some of jacks were total duds but from a pack of 12 jacks I have 9 solid cables.

I do really like the flat patch cables tho!

The EBS cables are awesome - all I’ll use now, they chased George L’s off my board! To me the cost of good patch cables is worth it - no fun trouble shooting your board during soundcheck.

Several people who commented on these on the AMS site said they replaced George L Cables with these. That seems like a pretty good vote for these being quality cables. I’ve never had George L’s but always heard they were among the best.

Based on my own anecdotal experience I’ve come to prefer soldered over solderless cables. I make em from scratch and I also have about 40 EBS flat patches (not the gold ones) of various lengths. A few years now and not a single EBS failure.

I’ve had these for years, zero problems. Replaced my george L-cables, that I always had some trouble with when I least needed it.

No, they're molded. They are lower profile than pancakes though, so it depends on which is more important to you.

My board is primarily EBS flat cables and I also appreciate how compact and low profile the plugs are. On a whim, I bought a pack of those Reverb patch cables last week... I was already buying a pedal and they were having a 20% off sale and I figured I’d get some spares for backups, temporary patches. But mainly as fill ins until I bought another batch of EBS cables.

For a quick visual comparison test, I plugged one of each into a pedal. To my surprise, the Reverb plugs have just as narrow profile as the EBS plugs! The cable was also much narrower than I expected... not flat cable thin of course but the pics on Reverb make it look like normal guitar cable; it’s noticeably thinner.

Once plugged in it’s VERY close, slight edge to EBS, as the “ridges” on the Reverb cables are a touch thicker but their profiles are nearly identical:

EBS still wins for plug width but this is less of a concern for me.

It’s odd because I’ve seen comparison pictures of EBS vs switchcraft specific pancake jacks, plugged in or otherwise, and there was no comparison, it was EBS by a mile. And I assumed all switchcraft-like plugs were the same... clearly not!!

Granted, I haven’t tried the Reverb cables in narrow/tight spots yet, where the EBS’s shine, but its hard to argue against their value proposition (3 for $10) and narrow profile. The Reverb cables also have screws/nuts so are probably serviceable.... I say “probably” because I haven’t tried to take one apart yet

Will these angled flats work with a pedal that plugs from the top that also has a lip above where the plug and cables go? Seems like one area where they're not going to work, although I saw mentioned in a sale of the same pedal I'm thinking of (Aguilar), seller referred to it as a lip-less unit ... so maybe that design is just going away.

The problem with all pancake plugs i’ve used, is they sometime cover the power jack. Making it un-usable. And also the cables being too hard to bend compared to the ebs cables.

The EBS cords are great, I don't see the need for the gold ones. In addition to being so small, the cables are really flexible so you can really tighten up your board.

Yes, Aguilar changed the design a few years ago for that reason. It would be problem with right-angle jacks in any direction unless you were able to have them face directly downwards off the edge of the pedalboard like so:

Yeah impulse buy on my part. I thought they only made the gold ones. Second order placed and I’m getting the regular EBS cables.
