Best Pedal Tuner

is there any real disadvantage to using a mini LED korg tuner plugged into my amp's tuner-out that's velcro'd to the side of my amp? always wondered why people bought pedals that are quite a bit more expensive or rackmounts that are huge.

all of this realy does depend on what You are Doing with it as to weather it is a real disadvantage. being able to see in sun and at a distance, Moving,Transporting,Storing Gear for some is not a Issue. if it is working for you,it is Awesome. why cant Gutards with Strats stay in Tune maybe he needs one too

I say a boss model of some sort. My TU-2 has been awesome. Also, my guitarists pictchblack crapped out on him during a sound check while on tour. That was not fun. Then we had to search the streets of Osaka to find a music shop to get him a replacement before the gig started. He's got a TU-3 now and it's really good.

TurboTuner and Pitchblack are both nice. Pitchblack+ also serves as an A/B switch.

However, both of them have one "feature" which I find to be a drawback - they always mute while tuning. The up side is that they don't use power while not tuning, and they are both true bypass. But I really wish they had an option to keep the tuner active and pass the signal through at the same time. I get around this at the moment by using the Pitchblack+ as my A/B switch and "muted" tuner, while feeding the TurboTuner from the tuner out on my amp (so it's always on).

I believe the Peterson pedal tuners (StroboStomp 2 / Stomp Classic) can be configured as either true bypass OR constant tuning (with signal passed through). I probably would have just gone with a Peterson if they had a model with the A/B switch built in like the Pitchblack+. Oh, and I think the Peterson's have better support for Buzz Feiten tuning - which would be more of an issue if my MTD z6 wasn't fretless...

Petersons have had a lot of positive feedback on TB, although there have been some durability issues with the displays on older models. TurboTuner and PitchBlack have also been well received and deservedly so. IMHO, any of these three would be a substantial improvement over a non-strobe tuner.

I have a pitchblack mounted on my pedalboard which I run through the dedicated tuner output of my Sadowsky outboard preamp - this way I can leave it on while playing and also kill the sound while tuning by hitting the mute switch on the Sadowsky. However, compared to a Turbo Tuner, the tracking isn't that fast so playing fast passages with the tuner on doesn't always give a true indication of pitch. For other reasons though (accuracy, true bypass, easy to read etc) the pitchblack is excellent. Also, it has a DC out jack which is VERY useful for patching in other pedals (or in my case, a light for my music stand on dimly lit stages) without having to use a second power supply.

The turbo tuner tracks incredibly fast even on fast passages (I think there's a demo video somewhere on the website). Because of this, I'll be looking to pick one up at some point specifically to use with my unlined fretless in order to (visually) help with keeping good intonation. I intend to keep it somehow clamped to my music stand and on permanently, powered up from the DC out jack of the pitchblack.

Both are great tuners and (IMHO) several notches above the TU-3.

Never tried anything but the Korg Pitchblack. The Pitchblack is excellent and it does a great job giving some juice to a few pedals when needed. As mentioned by previous posters it has a nice large display and is true bypass. It is also smaller than the Boss Tu2 but not by much. I was considering the polytune but was able to get a good discount on the Pitchblack locally.

This thread should have a pedal tuner poll!
