Phil Jones Big Head. That's been the clearest and most powerful headphone amp I've had (Well, that and a Cafe Walter; but CW is not a preamp). It was able drive 80ohm DT770s with authority, even better than my 3leaf Enabler. After the PJB and Enabler, I'd say a Raven Labs PHA1 is also one of the best.

Just got this. Love it. Plenty of I/O flexibility for practice plus DI options. High quality headphone amp will drive phones no problem.

I hear you, bro! But you asked for "great," and that's exactly what the PJB is

If it's any help, it's a superb sounding preamp (the bass and treble controls are very musical) and functions as a USB interface for recording. Just keep your eyes open for a used one, which generally go for ~$180. I got mine used about 2 years ago and have had no issues. Also, PJB is known for having good customer service regardless of original ownership.

If you don't need a preamp, just get a Cafe Walter. They go for <$150, and sound as good as anything else, seriously.

Need something even cheaper? Not sure what else works reliably, but perhaps look into an Earwig Headphone amp.

Upfront full disclosure, I'm a typical TB'er who has at times bought and sold gear like I change my underwear. But for my headphone practice setup it was "buy once and cry once". You guessed it, my headphone amp is a Phil Jones Big Head. I've had it for at least three years and I have never found anything better to replace it with. I was able to buy it from American Musical Supply as an open box for about $180, IIRC.

For reference, I also tried the 3-Leaf Enabler and I had a Phil Jones Bass Buddy before the Big Head. The Big Head has the perfect balance of size, battery and function, exactly what you need to get down to business. The only other thing I've used that has worked as well was my old Soundcraft Folio Notepad mixer, but it is too cumbersome. Any name brand (yes even Behringer) compact mixer would probably be superior to the Vox Amplug thing.
