Happiness with tone equals playing more relaxed and with confidence.
The quest for the right replacement PU is a worthy endeavor IMO if you love everything else about the bass.
I don't agree that all P basses sound pretty much the same. I changed the pups in mine and it made a huge difference to my ears.

Just to clarify, I don't think people were saying they "all sound pretty much the same" meaning "it makes no difference what pickup it is 'cause they're all the same anyway". I think it was more along the lines of "so much of the P bass tone comes from the style and position of the pickup, no matter what you put in there it's gonna have a particular ("P") sound". Of course changing the pickup will change the sound (sometimes drastically!), but barring any major flaws, all P pickups installed correctly should sound "like a P".

I went with the Seymour Duncan SPB2's and I'm very happy with my tone now
