Best punk bassist ever

Isn't real punk anti-musical and anti-everything?

If a punk bass player becomes an exceptional musician then he would have to move on to play something like jazz.

punk isnt a mohawk,listen to any of the good punk bands and they all have their distinct sound,ramones,dead kennedys,sex pistols,black flag etc.you dont have to be a ****** musician to be a punk.I recall a ton of hairbands from the 80's that got more kudos for playing. A band like poison,give me a break.baobby dahl a great bass player? they were not punk.

And Paul Gray is such a obscure choice. I do enjoy what he did though.

It's not if you like the English punk scene. The Damned have had a strong following since their appearance, and it's sad they got through splits and reunions based on stupid differences, to me they're the best punk rock band out there.

They slowly turned into a gothic act, starting with Phantasmagoria, I guess they were good at it, but were much better at punk than gothic.

Vanian is pretty much the only remaining member, I was never too much of a fan of his singing, but he was part of their sound and have always had great guitarists, like Brian James, who went to form The Lords Of The New Church with Steve Bator (RIP), and rhythm sections (mostly Rat Scabies, who got into a big fight with Captain Sensible, another great musician).

Neat Neat Neat & New Rose are emblematic of the English punk era and have been covered 100s of time (including by GnR).

I'd say any of the 3 Damned Bassists of 70s and 80s (Algy Ward, Bryan Merrick and of course Paul Gray) are probably in the top 10 of the best punk bassists.

I know, most of you are Americans, I'm from France, we have listened to different records, you'd be more inclined to favoring US band members, but I'm making my own educated choice.

Funny you say that but my guitarist, who was a real thrasher, has now picked up drums and plays paying jazz gigs. That's what years do to you

no.. it's about energy & expressing yourself in a direct way... you can be technically good or bad and still do that

this is why Jaco could credibly call a tune 'Punk Jazz'...

it has more in common with original rock n roll than most rock music you hear today

lately i've been digging a wilhelm screams new bassist. simply holds down the low end when needed, but can shred like a mother****er when needed as well.

he is definitely a virtuoso among punks if ive ever heard one. easily one of my favorite bassists of all time. the horse still blows my mind

not a single mention of joe principe (rise against/88 fingers louie).. he has one of the most distinctive tones and styles in punk rock and hardcore.

ive liked some of his lines before.. but overall i cant put up with them for long enough to appreciate them. the music sounds fine.. but after a while all the political lyrics start to piss me off.

ive seen them live by accident, and they could have played another set in the time they spent b*tching about the government, setting up confetti cannons and playing anti-war music.

Talented maybe, but a complete douche.

I generally dont complain about bands selling out, but anti flag were one of them. True hypocricy in their case!

Out of interest, have you seen Rancid live? I've seen them a couple times. Christ, 90% of the local bands I see are a damned sight tighter than them, it's like seeing a high school band playing a talent show. The guy has talent, but he should have picked up a strat or something, he sure doesnt play bass

all third wave ska is punk derived.

i have a friend who hates labeling music.. and i really dont see the harm in it. if you can put your music into general categories, it helps sort things out.

its not always cool to pigeon-hole an entire genre (especially one that is loosely or wrongly defined by the general population, IE, emo).. but i can honestly say that i dont like a single grindcore band. thats a very specific, very niche market, and i just dont like it.

but to at least be able to say "well its at least a metal band.. thats for sure" isnt always a bad thing.

The problem is you start getting the douche bags saying things along the line of "They arent punk" based on whether they like 'em or not, missing the point of the genre itself.

Agree with the other statement too, while I dislike most emo, the original "emo" has some great offerings (Dag Nasty )

you're just old. a type of music doesn't disappear. if it existed at all it still is . if I play punk it exists. if I play disco , disco still exists. if I play forgotten music from the 20s it still exists. just because you don't like it doesn't mean it does't really exist. that's like sticking your head in the sand. BTW I'm old too.
