Eagles and Queen did it BEFORE autotune was invented. Since that little snake rendered music mute, everyone is suspect. CSNY could harmonize, but I saw too many shows where they tried and failed (performance-killling drugs, anyone?).

Just curious, but how are vocal harmonies usually stacked? Obviously they're not always the same, but what's the general way of doing it? Root, 3rds, ??? ?

I first thought of CSN, but then I remember I recently downloaded "4 Way Street". It was one of my favorite albums in college. Geessse...scary bad. In fact, every time I've seen a live clip of CSN or CSNY, the vocals are pretty bad.

My vote goes for King's X.

For me, it's most definitely The Beatles. Here's two other cool nominees:

Zappa's 1984 band, with Ike Willis, Ray White, and Bobby Martin all harmonizing

The two guys from System Of A Down.

Queen took what The Beatles and The Beach Boys offered vocally, and put it on steroids. Add a touch of vaudeville, barbershop quartet, and Zeppelin, and it's pop rock magic. Never before, and never since has a rock band sounded like that.

Okay, Jellyfish did a pretty good job, though they definitely took their cues from all of the above.
