My band is playing more and more heavy Blues and I am getting sick of switching from my Flatwound strung P to my Roundwound strung P between songs. I am now on the hunt for a Nickel Plated Roundwound string that is warm and thumpy (Trad. Tones )but can also sound alittle bright and cut through the mix with some bite. Can anyboby recomend a string that can cover these tones on my Fender P-Bass? Thanks,Steve

Fender 7150's or 7250's great strings for blues and cheap.

    +1 on the D'Addario's...
Been using them for Blues/Soul/Funk/Rock 'N' Roll for 10 years. Great strings...consistent, sealed packaging and very reasonably priced pretty much everywhere. XL 170's if you like a lighter gauge but XL 165's for more thump. )-(

Both the aforementioned D'addarios and Fenders are great strings. Nickel XL's are my fave roundwound. D'addario also makes a pure nickel roundwound, which might be something to look into.

7150 fenders are pure nickel, 7250 are nickel wraped over steel core.

  8. I like the 7250 and 7150 strings myself.

  9. Elixir - expensive, but supr toneful for blues and they'll last forever.

IME, I would get a set with an 85 A and 105 E. Tone control can roll off the top end. D'Addario and Fender are good choices. I also like the Sadowsky Blue Nickels.

  11. d'addario half-rounds sound great too.

    +1 on the 7150's.
D'Addario XL 160's are very good too. Guaged, 50-70-80-105.

dude....I strung my '69 P with TI flats for years....tried out a set of DR Sunbeams and I don't plan on going back! They're brighter when they're new but once they die a little bit it's like having a growlier, punchier flatwound....but round! I love them!

THATS IT ! ! ! Sunbeams ! I used them a few back years back and yes they are great strings and get very warm as they age. I have been using the D'Addario XL Nickel and just can't get the tone I am looking for out of them. Thank You bassdoubler ! Steve

For rounds I always liked GHS Boomers (.105 E).

But I switched to flats and tapes years ago.

Infeld SuperAlloys, hands down, the best rounds for blues..... especially if you're looking for a 1 bass solution. I love sunbeams too, but they the SA's last longer, are warmer right out of the pack, and to my ear, sound better on the P. I love sunbeams on my jazz though.

Before I switch to LaBella flats, my choice was Rotosound Swing, but I like DR too.
