Best Shortie

I've played the majority of the short scale options and I think the Acinonyx v1 is probably the coolest. The tone is good and unique, though it feels a bit more toy-like than the other options. Other than that, the Mustang Bass is a classic and solid choice. Either the JMJ or a custom build with Nordstrand pickups would be my choice. The Spector Bantam is another good option that doesn't get much mention. The 5-string medium scale (32") version is more popular, but it comes in a 30" 4-string version as well that is totally solid.
Along the lines I was thinking. The Musicman Stingrays look interesting too (never played a MM).

I don't own any long-scale basses now.
Mine are
Ibby Mikro 5 28.6" ........ light, plays great and the 2 two single coils are punchy & thick.
Ibby Mezzo 5 32"...... great neck, active electronics, it is a keeper.
Acinonyx V2 30.7........ plays like a dream and 6lbs.
Ibby EHB1005SMS 30"-32" fabulous neck and much easier to play, and after installing a strap button at the input jack.

Yes, I was looking at the Ibbies, too. I've never played one of their el basses, but I did have an Ibby acoustic bass until quite recently. Heck of a good sound on that, for the price point.

I'm an owner of 2 EBMM Stingray Short Scales, and I've played several SBMM Stingray Short Scales (including borrowing a friend's for a gig just to compare it to the USA models), and I absolutely think that for the money, the Sterling Stingray Short Scale is the best short scale on the market in it's price range.
Thanks. Which price range are the ones that you have? I'm looking at those currently at around £750 in the UK at the moment.

As a Mustang player, I've had my hands on the Player II and I think it's a solid bass. Of course, I'm a bit biased because I love the overall Mustang package, as long as you get one that isn't a boat anchor (mine is just over 9 lbs).

Personally, I would vote for a Mustang with Mustang pickups. The Player II sounds pretty much like a P bass, which isn't bad if that's what you want. The J pickup in these does have a pretty nice sound when it's played solo, so there's that. The Squier CV Mustang is well within your budget, and imho, is well worth the entry price if you want to go with the Mustang pickups. On the upper end of that scale is the Fender Vintera II, which is probably just outside your price range, but is a really nice bass.

Useful, thank you. No problem with the bias... would be quite rare if someone had practical experience of both.

Looking for a short scale too. Have you heard of Uk-based Retrovibe? I find their models very cool but not that many reviews.
I'm looking at them, too. Sent an email for some info, no response as of yet. Thought I'd do some Retrovibe searching her on TB to learn more. I am wanting to build a Tele Bass-esque short scale, the T30 Telecaster Deluxe Bass looks almost exactly what I have in mind.
