best super groups

Down started as a super group, but now that Pantera is gone and C.O.C is on hiatus Down is pretty much just a group. Hellyeah is great on paper, but I just don't love them as much as the members original bands, (mudvayne, pantera, nothingface). Same with Audio Slave. I like soundgarden and r.a.t.m. more. Them Crooked Vultures is good, but I don't hear JPJ really doing anything special on that album. There were a bunch of killer super groups on the Roadrunner United album. Great concept. Get 4 guys who are the main songwriters in their band, and let them choose musicians from the labels roster throughout history. Different musicians for pretty much every song.

love them. i'm not really a hagar kinda guy, but for that band it just works.

Down is great!
Hellyeah is a disappointment.
AudioSlave had its moments.

For a one album get together - Layla and other assorted Love Songs, from Derek and the Dominos is pretty tough to beat. There is some amazing playing from everyone on that record.

Clapton, Carl Radle, Jim Gordon, Bobby Whitlock and the late great Duane Allman


Also, A bit obscure, but if you can find them, the Foamfoot / Sweet Pickle Salad sessions are incredible.

The Black Crowes and Jellyfish
The "Sweet Pickle Salad" group/sessions happened after the "Tall" sessions ended and before the "Amorica" session began, about February, 1994 in Los Angeles.

The group was made up of most of the folks that played the Foamfoot show: Chris Robinson (TBC) on vocals, Marc Ford (TBC) on lead, Andy Sturmer(Jellyfish) on drums, Jimmy Ashurst (Ju Ju Hounds) on bass with the addition of Craig Ross on guitar and Roger Manning (Jellyfish) on keyboards. In articles around that time there were reports that they were going to release it. The style of the music is described by Chris - "The songs sound like a cross between CSNY and Pink Floyd, every song is like 10 minutes long."
