Cool concept. First one I thought of was Bad Company with members from Free, King Crimson and Mott the Hoople. The albums Bad Company and Straight Shooter come to mind.

Also, has anyone else thought that since the bass player and drummer are all that's left from the Beatles, and the guitar player and singer of the Who is all that's left of that group -- that there should be "The Whotles"?

I though Traffic was a bit later...maybe not.
Cream was a supergroup (John Mayall Bluesbreakers + Graham Bond Organisation...the 3 guys were considered highly enough on their own...that's why they were called CREAM!).
Led Zeppelin was almost Moon/Entwistle + Page/Plant.

Hands down my favourite supergroup. Dave Grohl, JPJ and Josh Homme. Really doesn't get much better than that. I saw them live and I felt like I was watching giants.

"best"? imho none of them. The entire concept is fraught with problems: ego, expectation, hierarchy (or lack thereof), misguided direction/goals...
But on paper, lots of 'em seemed like a good idea!
My personal favorite (conceptually, not in actual practice) was XYZ: Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, Chris Squire & Alan White.

Actually an eclectic bunch imo. Glenn Hughes is awesome; but neither him nor Roger glover are better than one another. Joe Bonamassa one of the greatest sixers. Derek Sherinian certainly a world class key guy, just google him. Bonham. nuff said.
