I amazed that no-one I mean no-one has mentioned Ralphe Armstrong on the Jean Luc Ponty Albums. Man just forget about all the other posts and listen to the true master of distorted bass.

So all you devotees of distorted bass need to seek this out OK. IT will slam your mind. It is better than Bruce and Squire by the ********.
It is some of the best bass playing you will ever hear.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Pete Steele's Type O work yet - someone mentioned Carnivore, but he really refined his distortion after that. Not to mention that it all goes through chorus, and he has a sustainer on his bass (I think he has one of the only ones made).
A lot of the time, his bass sounds like guitar, while Kenny Hickey provides awesome texture above that.
And if you listen closely, most of his lines are McCartney inspired.
