Best way to leave a Band?

Leaving a band is more drama free than many seem to think...
My day job is basically in a 'project' based industry.
I get hired, work my ass off, then the client/boss tells me "thanks, bye!" and I am looking for the next thing.
The important thing is to leave on good terms so your are remembered as someone cool to work with.

Over time, you'll find that bands come and go, every position it temporary, and this becomes quite simple.
basically just do as Jive suggests.

I've been involved in situations where extricating people and gear was nearly a Herculean task and took a long time.

If its been a short run just say that you're out.

Hi all

Looking for advice on the best way to leave a band I'm in. I've only just joined but the drummer is leaving in January to live in Australia and the Singer/guitarist is a complete flake and scrounger. He has no job and constantly wants me to drive him to see his girlfriend. He never buys his own smokes and always thieves mine. We had to play on the radio recently and he emails me and says I'm taking all of us and our gear down because I'm the only one who can drive.

I'm not sure how old you guys are, but this does not seem like an organized band with direction and goals.

Of topic:

For all of you guys that are auditioning and your new to auditioning, this is an example of the type of band you would want to think twice about before joining.

It's something I have little patience for. I remember a band manager asking me if he could borrow 10.00 from me at a show. The guy was a 60 year old loser. Of couse i told him "no".

But in your case, I think you could just say "hey guys, it's not working out, peace".

Don't quit, become a closet case yourself, and play the wrong song every time, just play the bassline for whatever song that comes into your head, then they'll ask you to leave. It will be a hell of a lot fun. For instance play the Sweeet Emotion line over Proud Mary, Beatles Birthday over everything else.

Just tell them that while you enjoy playing with them, you don't think its the right fit for you. Offer to play any gigs that are currently scheduled and give them a firm date that you plan on leaving and stick to it. Chances are they will get pissed and just ask you to leave but at least you will have been professional about it. Whatever you do, avoid making it an ugly confrontation.
