Best. Week. Ever.

hey Dubadays, I'm happy for all your enthusiasm, but a bit of advice:

while you may be good, 5 years of experience really isn't enough to be considered all that great. Believe me, when I was 15, I thought I was the absolute best bass player around. Then I matured a bit, and really started to evaluate my playing, and realized that for the most part, I really wasn't very good. I didn't groove, I wasn't melodic, and so I hit the woodsheds all over again. I still have alot to learn

just try not to get too full of yourself.

Well, I thought I made it very clear that I know I'm still learning. I just think that I've really matured. So....I don't really know what you are getting at. No offense, but just because you say you weren't good, that doesn't mean I can't be (Again, I'm not saying I'm great or anything). Maybe you should wait to hear recordings before you evaluate my bass playing...just a thought.

Groove Merchant, nice. One of my all time favorite charts and of course the thad-mel orchestra, no one swings quite like they did.
Absolutely. We played Us this year as well, which I'm really fond of. It's a hard song to get to groove. The chord changes on the sax soli in Groove Merchant are very hard to get down, at least on the arrangement I was reading.

uh-oh, somebody's getting defensive! I was merely pointing out the ubiquitous teen inclination to self aggrandize. It would seem that you are not exempt from this.
Look, I was just saying that I had a good week, and I'm thankful to the people on this board for inspiring to push myself. I'm not really sure why you are trying to detract from that. I NEVER said I was better than anyone here, and I think it's a little unfair for you to assume that I'm not good just because I've been playing for five years, even if you haven't heard how I play.

Yea man as a struggling bassist in the HS jazz band that chart killed me! It was the exact same one as the thad-mel orchestra played, not a watered down version.

Edit: hey what HS do you go to? I graduated from North Thurston last year. We would make to the trip to LH jazz fest every year and actually got honorable mention which was cool, I was on bone then though...I'd love to hear that jazz band CD by the way.

The chart that I played in Junior High had some crazy notes written! You would go from low E string to halfway up the G string in a couple notes. Not a good arrangement. But, the chords in the sax soli are just so random. I mean, they fit, but it makes it very obvious that it's a Thad Jones piece.

Yea, it was 4 years ago I first heard those bass lines (Big Dipper is great too) and they're still some of my favorites. If you check out thads band playing it on youtube you'll see the style and character of that bassist.

Yeah. I ended up playing Us on electric and Groove Merchant on upright bass. I was amazed by how well the bass player could groove on Us with an upright.

Well, I'm in honors classes so I suppose I better be able to speak well lol. I try as hard as I can to separate myself from my increasingly idiotic generation, so it looks like my attempts aren't in vain!
