Boss BF2 or Maxon FL9. I like the FL9 better, but it's pricey. The BF2 is a great flanger for cheap.

I have a bf2 and fx72 stereo bass flanger. The dod sounds awesome and has a wide variety of sounds to be found, whereas I found the boss only really has one and it is really metallic and not really 'organic' which the dod delivers in spades

How is This one any different from the bf2?
I'll have to find my schematics, but the difference I believe is the clock chip and a couple other parts.
I have one of the old Japanese BF-2s, don't know if the newer ones are any different. I haven't tried many flangers because I haven't needed to. It's a matter of taste, but I prefer the BF-2 to the BF-3. I've had a few obscure old delay/mod units that worked well as flangers, but generally set them for other sounds and used the BF-2 to flange.

I use the BF3, and A/B'ed it against a friends BF2. I doubt it was the coveted Japanese BF2. I found the BF3 to be better. Using the "Bass" input on the BF3 kept more low end. The gate feature on the BF3 is awesome. And if you want really deep sweeps, the BF3 has a "super flanger" or "extra" mode that produces some really extravagant sweeps. I have not found that mode to be useful, but I look for more of a slow watery shimmer from a flanger more than full-on jet engine sweeps.
The BF3's only failing, if you could call it that, is a slight boost in volume. This works great when used on an otherwise clean tone, but can cause issues when used after dirt that is already adding gain to your signal. I find I can work around it ok for the most part.

I have owned the ADA Flanger forever it seems like. Don't know if they still make them, but I love mine.
I LOVE my ADA Flanger too. It's the best I've tried, by far. I have the reissue and it's fantastic.

Well, 2-way tie between the ADA and the Mutron Flanger. Neither still made, both wicked expensive on the used market. But sweet sounding.

Never heard this stuff referred to as "psychedelic" or "shoegaze" but I suppose there's always a first...
I always figured he was running through a Leslie cabinet for this and on Starship Troopers. Ditto for JPJ on Heartbreaker. If you know what pedal he was using instead, do tell!
OD/dist plus trem is pretty cool on bass when the arrangement gives some room for the bass to breathe.
