Better sit down for this one...Stingray abuse

I've always wanted a pink bass but every one of them I've come across has felt like it was made for 10 year old girls. I want something more professional, just painted pink. So it hit me today, buy a 'Ray, sand it down and spray it pink. Do it up with the white pearloid guard and watch 'em drool over it!

Of course, if there was an easier route aka EB offers that color already, then I'd take that for sure. But I haven't come across it on the site or on Google. I haven't been on the EB forums yet but will likely get on there in the near future.

Any suggestions, tips, pleas for me not to go through with it?

Why not just get a Mark Hoppus signature P-Bass? It's already pink, and besides everyone knows Stingrays are a one trick pony, while the P cab get any sound ever.

That last part was sarcasm, if you couldn't tell.

Do as you wish, it's your bass.

Why not just get a Mark Hoppus signature P-Bass? It's already pink, and besides everyone knows Stingrays are a one trick pony, while the P cab get any sound ever.

I always despised Blink and therefore refuse to go that route...interesting suggestion though. I can't defend the honor of the 'Ray here since I've never owned one but I will say that I've found the Precision to be a one-trick pony.

Hey, I think a vibrant candy pink with a pearloid guard would rock. I would make the following two recommendations:

1) Consider doing this with an SR5. Ordinarily I'm not a huge fan of the SR5 pick guard shape but I think it will fit your plan perfectly.

2) Unless you have a background in this stuff you should get a pro to do the finish. You'll want a good quality finish to make this work.

I love the idea. Post pics once it's done.

On a personal note the 'ray is the bass against which all other basses should be judged, so it's a great choice for a project.

I actually was leaning more towards a SR5...interesting how great minds think alike . I've done a bit of build and repair on all kinds of instruments for a few years so I've got a little experience. I've even got a new spray-gun on my Christmas list.

ready for a shocker? i too hate(d) Blink, but they're self titled album wasn't that bad. if you get a chance, you might look into it. not very punk. more rock. and it's pretty good.

number 2: the Hoppus Sig bass isn't that bad either. nice neck, good electronics, sturdy and well built. much like a lot of other sigs, sometimes you have to look past the name to see the bass for what it is, and the Hoppus isn't that bad. yes, the association sucks, but a friend of mine who went to Berklee didn't care enough to let that stop her. something to think about

Fender has made Shell Pink models, and there's the Pink Paisley model. Plenty of options without painting one yourself....just get a Fender.

And you don't SAND an instrument, because that will destroy the contours. You strip the old finish. More info at www.reranch.com.

One of the nicest basses I ever owned was a Shell Pink Japanese precision with maple fretboard. Probably the 2nd nicest looking bass I ever owned between my Lava Pearl Stingray 5 string and my Rickenbacker 4003 mint green Blue Boy.

Let me tell you about the color pink. I lived in Germany in my middle school years. I ordered a trick BMX bike in the mid 80's and back then neon green, pink, orange, etc. were pretty cool. I got the lavender one, which was more like neon pink when I got it. I loved it when I first got it. It took months to get there but when it did I was the cool kid on the block. I rode it while all the kids watched me ride. One day I was in the park doing curb endos when this really hot girl that lived across the street came up to me. I thought this was my chance to finally hook up with the hottest girl in my school. She came up and said in a mocking, sarcastic voice, "What are you doing on a pink bike? You look like a homo!!" I was devastated for a few hours. You know who that girl was? Mayte Garcia. She became one of Prince's dancers and later married him. I never wore or rode anything pink again.
